sarcophyton..toadstool, HELP???
Hey Everyone!
I always just read what everyone says on here, and have learned so much. Thanks by the way, but now I desperately need some advise on the second toadstool I may be getting ready to lose. I acclimated it right, put it in my tank 3 days ago and it still is drooped over. When I bought it it had all it's polyps out, looked great. So now, this evening when I got home it seems to be losing some skin around it's base. SOOOOO...I'm wondering if I should let it just hopefully perk up, or try so sve my loses and (gain) divide it up hopefully saving a piece of it maybe even more. I know this seems in haste, but there seems to be a noticable difference since yesterday. I have a refugium I could put some frags into. Help!!! Thanks

55 gallon, over a year old
salinity ~1.025 /pH ~8.3
vho-1 actinic white & super actinic
maxi jet powerhead, protein skimmer, live rock.
mandarin goby, pearly jawfish,2 starfish, limpits, crabs, snails, emerald crab...quiet a few smaller soft and hard corals, all of which are healthy
I really wonder if cutting the crown of the toadstool may save some of it, or if anyone else has had this similar problem and waiting it out works. If the base didn't look so flaky, my concernwouldn't be so strong THANKS again.

You say it's sloughing around the base... sarcos normally slime and slough off the top. But... it can drape that way and look bad. Any way we can get a pic? Leathers tend to be pouty when first added - some species more than others.
The quick test: if the base is soft/disintigrating/necrotic/black, frag it. If you can't tell, give it time. You'll generally know if it's disintigrating - all you have to do is aim a powerhead at it and it will POOF into dust. If just a little dust comes off, it's probably just sliming and getting used to its surroundings. You might also try moving it to a different area.
You say you've lost one other - did it do the same thing? And what kind of Sarco is it? A toadstool? The yellow kind?
FWIW, you could lop the top off. I've done that to many pieces to save them or intentionally frag them. The pain is getting the crown to mount to another rock.
Again, a picture is worth a thousand words...

One thing about leathers is they are notorious for complete collaspe and never recover for no apparent reason! Don't quote me on this but I believe that to be correct. You may be better off fragging some healthy tissue and start with that!

Cant get my pics into these messages, they are on disc and saved in my documents. I'm getting frustrated. I'm sure it's something simple. Any tips on how I can post my images?

Your leather doesn't neccessarily look unhealthy. The base looks the same as many other toadstool leathers I've seen. I would give it a few days and see what happens.
BTW, It's not neccessary to start a new thread to post pics. You can do it in your replies.

I would agree with Rick O. I have had toadstools droop and ones completely disintegrate. Yours doesn't look to bad for now. The base in my experiences is the first part to start falling apart and you can really tell. If that does happen just frag it.

Seeing pics makes me lean more towards waiting too. If you want to try to prop it up against a smaller rock, feel free. As long as you can still keep an eye on the base, propping it up won't matter. I'd hold off on fragging just yet - with that much stem to work with, you could lose a lot before needing to really worry.
Hang in there,
Danielle

thanks for the help
what you guys are saying is real reassuring, just now when I got home I took this picture (hopefully below).
I wonder if I should put it in more of a current and stand it up more? It has lost more layers around it's base, but the underlying part seems sort of strong. I know toadstools shed their skins, but I guess I didn't realize this much....The cap is still collapsed, but shows no signs of peeling back like the base and actually looks healthy. Thanks to everyone for your input. I just don't want to do nothing to help save this coral when I could have.
