Not sure about my Xenia...
Hey guys! I have a question. I am evry new to taking care of xenia and was wondering if it was normal for them to detach from their base rock and attatch to my glass? Any ideas?

They'll go wherever they grow. I have it growing on my glass - which makes it easy to prune. If you don't want it on your glass, peel it off and use a rubber band or a strip of tulle to tie it back on a rock. It will reattach in a couple of days.
HTH,
Danielle

Yup, they will spread , and grow wherever they can attach to ,,,,i heard of people that have the entire back glass covered in xenia,,,,,
remember , for the most part, if you cut/slice off a xenia off a rock the base left will/could grow again,,,,
i went from "hope these couple of frags do well, " to , "dang!gotta prune these ""weeds"" back again "
when the time comes to remove excess xenia, start checking into your LFS, as far as taking them in for store credit etc.
xenia ship poorly, so the LFS is the best bet,,,,
a lot is said about the proper parameters for xenia, i myself pretty much watch them , and see how they are doing and add Lugol's once inna while,,,,mine are doing great, and close to "darn weed " status,,,
i love watching them sway in the water movement, and pulse like crazy,,,,
on the detach part, chances are, they "split" , and started in a new spot,,,,,
HTH,,,,

True , to a point, ,,,depends on how much you have, etc.....
BTW: i dosed 3x times what was reccomended yesterday, all are fine, and out . pulsing more,,, (i have prob a colony of the size of a half basketball)
it is best to go on the lean side for dosing,,, just watch your xenia, and go from there,,,,,

Lugol's additions are unnecessary for tanks that have regular water changes. I have had them in such proportions that I took a system down to rid it of these colonies. I am still trying to eradicate them in the 180 left in Wellford, I kalk them about every 2 weeks. This system is 6 yrs old and never had a single iodine supplementation, The only think I use Lugol's for is to make a dip for new coral specimens.
BTW, if you do have a large colony population of Xenia, they will act as a great export mechanism for both nitrates, carbon, and phosphates. just slice, glue to rubble and swap.
