new acquisition in holding tank

I found an interesting specimen, I haven't done the ID yet, prolly spend some time on it this week, but thought you would like to see it. Some sort of Zooanthid, the interesting part is that the body tubes are fused together , but bifuricate as the indifidual oral discs form. Each individual arises from a common mat. Caribbean origin, autotrophic, although it seems to relish newly hatched brine shrimp. Open during the day, retracts in cycles during the night.

Tom,
I think I have the same stuff in my tank. It came on a piece of live rock and was just a little speck 2 years ago. It has grown quite a bit since then. Very strange stuff. I'll try to get a picture of it in the next hour or so. Bob

Ok, I'm guessing that Tom's is Epizoanthus americanus and Bob's is doing a great imitation of Palythoa caribaeorum.

Thanks Jerel,
Apparently they are quite common but I haven't seen one before. Cool little coral!

Bob If yours is a Paly, be warned that they contain palytoxin. If you ever handle it, be sure and wash your hands real good. Don't scratch your eyes or put your hands to your lips either.

Don't ask me how I know that.

Jerel,
Thanks for the heads up. I just read about it in "Aquarium Corals" and what suprise! I had no idea it was that dangerous. I'll have to keep my hands away. Thanks again, Bob

I have some red epizoanthids that have a similar structure, and they are non-photosynthetic but eat well

Jerel stole my guess....

Glad I never attempt to taste coral slime -- the stuff just has no epicurial appeal to me, so I always wash before I chew my fingernails .....
