carnation
There were a few mention on carnation on another post, about how hard it is to feed. Can someone expend on this subject?
Thanks

Sure, Carnation or Dendronephthelea and related Schleronepthelea are Ahermatypic(non reef building) Nonphotosynthic(Not light dependent) corals that occur un underside of ledges and passageways in lower reefstructures where the curents bathe them in a constant barrage of prey items to choose from. Apperently they are not only picky whether its a zoo pr phyto plankton but they are geared to deal with very specific sizes of prey items. Unfortunatly while they are perhaps the most spectacular of reef dwellers they are not adaptable to typical closed system aquarium

Well DTs Phyto plankton seems to stave off the inevetble
FWIW a decent sized refugium supporting a lot of pods, Brisltle worms and maybe a pair of gravid shimp that are constantly producing eggs/larvae may help. I think in the long run a rally huge refugium as i described funneled thru a 29 gallon low light Carnation tank might work for a while, but all in all they have a dismal survival record

great, thanks.. I been using DTs for a while. Just hope it will last a little longer. I think I'll better take some picture to remember what this thing used to look like. For the past week, both of the Carnation went limp on me in the morning but purk up after the light is on. Is this the sign of the end to come???

OK I ran across this while archiving and added to it, I was wondering if the Fla bunch or anyone else had any further input or comment before archiveing?

Doug,
you are right about this... It finally went to big ocean in the sky a month ago. So it did that something for it to go. The truck was over a inch when I got it and gets smaller and smaller as months past. One day, it did not get up..

Dana Riddle I *believe* is currently doing research on feeding Dendronepthya sp. Last time I corresponded with him he'd received a new grant for his research. I imagine when he has something to report, it will hit the journals. Meanwhile I stay away from those. It's too bad because they are GORGEOUS!
