frogspawn prop...

Just a question...
I have a frogspawn that has been in my tank for about 18 months, maybe less, and it had these little tiny branches comming out from the base of the larger polyp. Well a friend said that he was told that if you clip them and glue them to something they will grow... so I did this yester day. This morning the tiny little guys are out, even the one that was cracked, though I am not betting on that one to make it. Has anyone done this before? I really had to try as this frogspawn is a steel blue in color, and have a few friends who want one... plus I love making more coral (like I need it...) (btw the parent looks fine, was totally unfazed by the abuse of yesterday... although the sting it gave me on my finger is still a little raw)

I have one I whack away at occasionally. They are very fast to recover from the abuse.

I have many frags from 2 different original parents, a green hammer type and a pink frogspawn type. Several folks on this board have daughter frags form these parents. They are relatively easy to do and the props grow quickly (about 2 to 3 cm each 6 months). Feeding the mother colonies helps a lot.

No unfortunatly I havn't found a cord for my dig camera yet... and even then I would have no idea how to get the pix on here, I am difinatly illiterate when it come to computers! But today all the "babies" are out in force, even the one that was split down the center. The mother colony doesn't look like anything happened at all!
As to feeding I do that about once a week, maybe less depending on the time frame. But my clarkii clown has taken up residence and feeds it daily. You can see the difference between the blue/brown and the green/pink frogspawns, the blue/brown deffinatly has fatter tenticles, and the little "babies" are more numerous. I recently broke up the green/pink frogspawn to trade a piece and it shattered (and so did my heart! ) Of course you would never have known today, in fact it looks better as now all the polyps are recieving light, and you can see lots of "babies starting now. It was so big before that some of the lower polyps were crowded out.
Between the hammers and frogspawns they take up about a third to half of the tank, depending on thier mood. I have to say that these are probably my favs of my tank (along with everything else of course )

Thumbs up

I've done the same procedure on my frogspawn several times with great success so far. FWIW, the only warning I've ever received about fragging a frogspawn in this is way is to avoid side pressure on the frags themselves to avoid crushing their skeletal structure. Your small colonies will grow quickly and will son be tradeable. Good work!

Paul.

What do you feed your frogs spawn and hammer? I feed it pieces of scallops and shrimp when I feed my anonemoes. Just wondering if any thing special.

any meaty fleshy fish/crustacean/mollusk stuff. I have a chuncky much that I use a large turkey baster with to feed all the Euphyliids in the display and prop systems. Usually add a little selcon along with it. The ones iun the display get fed every 3 to 5 days, the ones in the prop system get fed daily. They grow quickly. The key is having small diameter foodstuffs and shutting off the water flow for 30 min while the injest the food. Keep away scavengers and fishes (use veggie cages if necessary...)

Ditto for me... I just feed them what the fish get. I don't have to worry about scavengers picking on them though as the clown pretty well keeps everybody off.
As to good growth; My first frogspawn was the one in question. It started with 4 large polyps and just after I put it into my tank it came down with brown jelly (AAAAAA!!) I lost all but one polyp, I was devistated! Well in the time that I have had it it has split into two large masses of many polyps, about 6 on one side and 5 on the other! I have never had brown jelly again and have added many other euphyliids to my tank since.
