Question

Flowerpot coral vs. Anenome for my clown

After reading many a negative review of anenomes on this board I have decided not to get one for my Percula Clown. The LFS has had a Flowerpot coral in one of their holding tanks for several months that their Percula's seem to love, I was thinking of getting one for my tank. Anybody have any experiences with Flowerpot's, good or bad? I read somewhere, I can't remember where, that they (and bubble coral) are a very aggressive coral.

I have a flowerpot and a true perculla in my 75 gal. My clown has shown no interest in the flowerpot, sadly.
I have read lots of negatives about Flowerpots, but I have really had no problems.
Both have been in the tank for over 6 months and are doing great, BTW.

Unfortunatly most flowerpots have a lifespan of less than a year in captivity

As stated, flowerpots are not well known for their longevity in captivity. I put a Hammer Coral in for my Perc. Took him about 6 weeks to take interest, but when he decided to host the hammer, he dove in with gusto. Not only is the Hammer a good choice for the perc, but it's become my favorite coral. It opens very large, and at times the perc will dive in and be totally obscured, only to come peeking out at another place. I just can't say enough good about the relationship between my percula and hammer. (I really MUST get a digital camera soon)

Some people seem to be keeping anemones with a degree of success, but most of those I have talked to have had them die within a few months. You are wise in not choosing one of these.

Percs have also been known to host Torch Coral and FrogSpawn.

Good luck,
bobc

I agree, flowerpot coral is not a good idea...Even if you get it to live (not many people do), the clowns would probably irritate it from fully expanding if they even decide to host in it. In my experience(I have 8 clown pairs in different tanks some with anenomes and some not), an anenome is easier than a flowerpot(Goniporia) and that xenia, colt corals, even mushrooms can serve as an easier to maitain host than anenomes. IMHO
