What kind of SPS can live under power compacts?
I read on this one site and it said some montipora don't need much light. I was wondering if i can get some or what.

Tell us some more about your system. What exactly do you have for lighting? How many gallons and what are the dimensions is your tank?

Yep, I'd ask the same question.
As for what you'll get of growth/color on SPS on PC ... I wouldn't expect too much. The two I've tried [about 5" from the lights] did show some growth, but lost any vibrant color [both montipora digitata, hardy varieties of it]. But the rate of growth, the nice color [not brown or very very faded] when moving the frags back to my MH tank struck me. I was keeping them alive, and very slowly growing, under PC ... but I sure wouldn't recommend it.
Really tried it because I had lost a couple frags falling down in the rocks - requiring re-aquascaping a few weeks later to rescue them. By that time they were very light starved, mostly whitish in color ... and I was worried they would be shocked from moving them back under my MH's. So to the PC tank's frag rack [4-5" below lights] they went ... until they showed they were alive and doing ok ... then back to MH where they colored up and started fast growth.
Ok, I ramble ... let us know your system.

Stupid grad school papers ... when forced to fill 25 pages, it affects your writing style -> wordy + fast typing = look out!
Not that I don't talk too much in real life, too

WELL MY TANK IS ABOUT 3X1X2 ITS A 30 GALLON TANK. I HAVE MAINLY SOFT CORALS IN THERE AND MUSHROOMS ONE CLAM. I HAVE A 30 GALLON SUMP UNDER IT. I'M CURRENTLY RUNNING POWER COMPACTS. 4X55 WATTS 10,000 K TOTAL OF 220 WATTS. ITS A VERY SMALL TANK AND NOT THAT MUCH DEPTH. SO I'M WONDERING IF I CAN PULL IT OFF.

I would say some montipora would be ok if you keep them up close to the top. PC's do not penetrate the water as deep as MH's, so the watt per gallon theory doesn't work. I would veer away from acroporas, most acros need MH's for good growth and color.
What species of clam do you have?
And please shut off your cap locks, on forum boards when you caps are on it means your yelling.

Yep, I wouldn't recommend a clam. In my 40 breeder [same dimensions, but 18" front to back] with 4 x 55 ... I had very little luck keeping good color.
I do have a good, though very slow, growth out of some montipora [were [purple, now just brown]. The acro frag that had been buried behind rocks ... it did come out with polyps when 3" below the water surface ... but I don't think would have lived for more than a month or two in there [but I didn't want to light shock immediately after finding it behind rocks with MH's].
All in all, Montiporas are the only thing I feel I can keep `long term' for SPS under 4 x 55w PC's. And growth and coloration aren't really that great, from my experience.
LPS, soft corals, zoanthids, mushrooms ... all seem to do fine with that sort of PC setup. Or so my experience goes ...

Well thats cool guys, man i don't kno if its worth it getting an Mh light for my small tank. I'm looking to upgrade tanks before i get a new light fixture. I have a crocea clam, and its doing really well opening up good color is good. i had it for about a week now. I have a lot of stuff in such a small tank looks really cool. I'm looking to upgrade to a 80 gallon tank. Then i'll get some MH, well i'll just have to wait on the nice stuff. O one more thing how do you use kalk? I put it in a one gallon jug and and top it off, but someone said i need dkh buffer to work with it. I dont' kno if i'm wasting all my money buying all these chemicals i don't need.

Try a frag of hydonophora. It should grow and do well under your lights.
