SPS are coloring up!!

Hey guys,
I bought these colonies about a month ago. They were dark brown wild colonies. They were inexpensive so we bought them in hopes that they would color up..... finally some progress

Right now I am running 2 250 watt 65ks and 2 110 watt URI vho actinics. I have been thinking about changing to 400 watt Radiums on a PFO HQI, but my growth and coloration are great with the Iwasakis, so am having major issues with changing a good thing.

Yeah, SPS are great. Like a grab bag. You never know what ya get when ya start, especially with wild colonies. I like captive raised much better, but I am really surprised at how well those top two are doing so quickly. Good quality colonies!!

Thats the deal with wild colonies, by the time they have been harvested and transhipped to our LFS's they gotta take a breath and recover. That equates to color loss, so if your are willing to try them they will usually reward you with turning into nice colored acropora. You just have to take that chance and give them the chance to recover, they usually do.

I would be concerned with switching to the 400w 20k radiums as I have heard so much about color loss. I have used these 250w 65k iwasaki's and have all the color you could want. These 250's are as good as they come for sps coral color. What I want to try are the 400w 10k ushios as I have gotten some sweet colored acropora frags recently and WOW, now that is some color.

Scott, LOL....I would never slap your hand. I know about wanting to always be doing something with our reef systems. I am itching to redo my aquascape in the 120. Now mind you I am having a lower lumbar{back} myelogram monday at the hospital. Plus several other tests. Patience is the name of the game and if anyone finds some send it my way.

I have been running 250W 65K Iwasakis (2-55W PC True Actincs) for about a month now & I have notived some of my SPS turning brown. I had moved up from a 175W 10K Ushio (same PC combo). When I switched I had reduced the photo period down from 10hrs to about 6hrs cause I had heard of things like this happening with to much light to quick.

Any thoughts?

I should be getting a 250W 10K Ushio in tomorrow so I can see if the higher kelvin makes a difference.

The one thing that confuses me is one of the SPS a Bali Slimmer,I got from Rick O, is one of the ones that has turned brown under the 65K & even has some bleaching. As most of you know Rick is running 2 250W 65K plus VHO actinics on his 120 & thought I should have matched the lighting pretty close.

Thanks all,
