Question

Green Horn Coral (hydnophora) getting white tips...advice?

We've had this frag only a couple of weeks, and I had originally put it near the top 1/4 of the tank under 175W MH/VHO actinics. Just today I noticed the white tips. I moved it down about 1/4 from the bottom of the tank, still under the lights, but not so bright now. Anything else I should do? Was this caused by something other than the lights?

Edit: Correction, I've identified it incorrectly. It's a green horn coral(hydnophora).

Thanks,
Shirley

Nope, it came from my rock trade and had been established a long time in his tank. I frequently have these problems with sps/lps and have not gotten any lately b/c of this. Some do so well, yet others just don't thrive. The other sps's I traded for are doing great! I hope I don't lose this one...

Lowering it in the water column should help. Montis dont need a lot of light. By looking at the pattern of the bleached area I would say its probibly, just from the lights or possiby from a coral sting. I think you will be fine. alot of time the tissue will regro of the dead skeliton. Keep an eye on it and let us know if it gets worse.

Jeff and all, I did get a hold of Kevin, and I've identified it incorrectly. It's a green horn coral(hydnophora). He recommended less light, and I already lowered it. I'm thinking you can't / should not cut the white tips off, right? I'd be afraid I'd kill it for sure.

Casey, did yours repair itself at the tips?

Mike, just read where you said it might regrow itself.

Thanks,
Shirley

Shirley I have an orange one just like that and keep it at the low light end of the tank and is doing well. So ditto to what everyone else has said. There pretty tuff, so it should recover.

ShirleyM,

You're right about it being a Hynophora. I have a smiliar one at home. The tissues are receeding at the tip and it has happened to me before. What I have done is clip off the receeding portion and give it time and it'll grow back. I have mind in high light, but not direct. But I've also had mind under a 65W LOA and it also did find. Just lost is green and went brown.

Hope this helps.

Jim
