how can you tell if acros are happy?
how can you tell if acros are happy?
hiya yah i am thinking of putting some acros into my tank but i have been wondering how you can tell if they are okay in there, as its easy with soft corals as they shrivel up or the polyps go away, but is this the same with acros?
if so could someone please show me a picture of this, and are all acros the same in this way?
thanx andrew

When they are smiling!
Well, I guess if they grow and aren't bleaching than they're doing okay!?

so when you say bleaching thats turning white right, so does this happen quickly in tanks or over a long time, and does it start from the tips or the base?

I'm not sure where it starts, but it can happen quite suddenly, yeah, it means turning white. It turns white when they expel their zooxanthella, which you may or may not know what they are. It will usually only happen in very bad water conditions, so it shouldn't be a problem!

If the polyps are extended, I assume they are happy, though if I leave the light on for 48 hours continuously and they turn white, then they are not happy, even if the polyps are extended.
If the tissue sloughs off and they turn skeleton white they are not happy; if they are all colorful and growing like weeds, they are happy.
I bought a beautiful tabletop, mostly light colored with electric blue tips. Happy? Two weeks later it's brown with only a hint of blue on the tips. Not happy?
As you can see, it's sometimes black and white, sometimes shades of grey. There's probably some radioimmunoassay test on a particular "happiness" protein that'd be really useful.

so how long should the coral be in the tank before the polyps come out, a bit of a stupid question, but how long would you leave it before you got worried?

What kind of acro is that? I have on that looks identical that was sold to me as an "Acropora"---can you imagine? Anyway, I'd be interested to know what kind I have.
Thanks,
Jodi
