acropora and temperature

I was talking to a LFS guy today and I was asking about acropora and he was saying that when the temperature went past 80F that this is harmful to the acropora. My tank in the summertime expecially goes to a high of about 82-83F does anyone have experiance keeping acropora in these temperatures? I want some acropora but I also dont want the acropora to die (defeats the purpose lol) any comments?

cheers

My tank temps are starting to drop below 80 degrees now. I let them drop to 76 during the winter. During the summer I run between 82 and 84 typically. Some days it get to 86.

I have pretty much the same experience as Steve stated above. My tank is just starting to come down to it's "winter" temps of about 80-82 degrees. Summer it goes to 84-86 because I have no chiller. I think temp stability is more important then actual temp within reason.

That is a good question - I have a couple of SPS, and in the summer keep my tank @ about 80 - 82, and winter 78 - 80

I wonder, in any, what the down side it to having SPS in about 80 degree water? Mine seem to be growing like made!

Any SPS pros have some factual insight, or exp on this?

This would be a good question for Anthony Calfo

I keep my tank at 79-80 year round. Before I had a chiller, though, I would keep the temp between 82-84, and everything seemed to do well. I personally like the temperature at 79, but I think that is a preference. Stability is the key. I do notice better polyp extension at 79 degrees, but some may notice better extension at 82 degrees.

I like to keep mine pegged at 80 to 79. Like Above the worse thing you can do is have your temp have large swings. From my experence warmer temps (even though in the wild they might be fine) are not the best for acro's (amongst other corals) higher temps are more conducive to bacterial and pest growth. Plus you are also alot closer to the bad high end temps if something goes wrong.

IMHO

Can I add my dos pesos too!

While I do think it's possible to duplicate wild reef temps in a closed system, there are other things that have to be in place to do that long term. The biggest issue would be, it wouldn't be what you would call a reef tank and certainly not look that way.
I agree, the safest bet I feel is to run temps on the middle to mid/lower range. About 78-82F is just fine to me.
