Picture of RTN in a SPS

Here is a coral that I fragged today because of RTN. I believe it was caused by being in too much light. I fragged it into 3 pieces 1 has already degenerated. The first photo is the piece that the skin was falling off of. The second picture is the good portion I fragged. I have moved the frag to a lower light area and increased water movement over it. Hopefully it will recover, but once this starts, it's usally the end, but will see. EDIT (RTN not RTM )

Any thoughts or experiences with Lugols or one of the commercial scleractinian dips?

Sorry to see anyone lose a specimen, but that was a beauty!

Prolly NOT the thing to do with the dead skeleton ("...buried in the refugium..."). Although nobody has really come up with an absolute pathogen associated with RTN, there are a number of theories, as well as half a dozen possible culprits. Apparently at this time, most of the mixed bag of opportunistic infections associated with RTN may or may not be the actual causes of the syndrome, but regardless, it would be best to dispose of the skeleton outside your biotope (or at least soak it in a 10% dilution of Clorox for a day). This scratches the surface of a huge area of research on RTN. Not that this helps now, but a dilute Lugol's bath may have helped the frag survive. Eric (Borneman) has several threads on the topic on RC (heh, if you can get on!), it would behoove you to check them out.

Thanks Tom/all,
Yes it could of been a pathogen, but think it just got blitzed by my lighting. Of all the frags I've gotten from other people I have not had problems with them. But seems when I get one from the LFS they sometimes lose there skin. LFS's normally don't have the light intensity that we have in our home aquariums. Next time will put one in the shade for a couple of weeks and then slowly move it to more light.

I saved the bird's nest I got from the same lfs, by putting it in the shade. But one of the other frags is bleached but still has good polyp extension, seems to be getting darker now.

Will get some iodine and have it ready also.
