How can I help it?

Here is a picture of a recent LFS rescue. Couple of questions on it, though.
First, what kind of coral is it?
What can I do to help it?
And lastly, what can I expect to see as it recovers?

Lights are 260w, 10,000k x 2 PC's
Calcium kept at 430-450
Phytoplankton,iodine and other regularly added.

Thanks!

Save the coral...

you got your work cut out for you on that one. it looks pretty far gone. on corals like that it is just a hope and see. if your tank conditions are up to its likeing, then you may have a chance. i would keep it in the light. do you know how much light it was under at the LFS? if it was under poor lighting start near the bottom of the tank and work it up, if it seems to be getting better.

if you keep this habit up, you might want to start taking samples of their water in the tank that the coral came from. hopefully you will be able to figure out how the coral got that way. high nitrates, poor lighting, poor ph.

What about....

Can the "dead" parts be removed? Can I break off the live sections? I think they said it got that way by being shaded out and picked at by an Angelfish.
Its just that the live parts look so good and the bad...well....bad

Thanks for help and input.
And thankyou for the scientific name, but does it go by an easier to remember name??? Its so we can quit referring to it as "the half dead coral"

Thanks again!
Nicole

Sorry, that's an open brain.

I had one do something very similar, although it wasn't shaded. Tissue just kept sloughing off. Mine was less than half that size with two main lobes. First one lobe started, and before I could cut the other off, it had started as well. I have no idea what had caused it, but the LFS I purchased it at had about a half dozen at the time and they all did the same thing.

Open Brain, hmmmm.....

I have one of another color so now I have an idea of how it should look. How can I break off a lobe? There are a few sections completely intact with a mouth in the center.

Thanks for your help on this!
