Ok, after checking on it again tonight, I believe that the clam is dead.
Its appearance has not changed from the day I bought it. I know that that is not the best way to judge how well an animal is doing, but I expected it to close up if there was a problem.
I was scared to get the crabs out with my fingers, fearing that it would snap shut on a crab if I messed with it. I dropped some
shrimp pellets on the sand next to it, and as expected, most of the crabs went for the bait. I picked up the clam to shake the last one out and noticed that they had been eating it from the bottom. The clamshell seems to be stuck open.
That will be that last time I try a clam with power compacts even if they are touted as “lower light” clams. I guess I need to remove it so that it does not foul up the tank.
