The Reef Tank - Nano Reefs

Hi there,
Last month I started a 10G nano, now I want to start a 30G reef tank.

Sump

I'm going for a clean look for the 30G, so I was thinking is it possible to put all my filters into the sump?

Here's what I have in mind, I'm going to turn my current 10G into a sump.
The sump is divided into 3 parts. For the first part I will put a HOB filter or Canister (not sure yet) and a Protein Skimmer there, 2nd part is live sand and rock, and the 3rd part is where water is pumped back to my main tank.

Live Rock and Sand
30 gallon x 1.3 pounds
= 39 Pounds of LR

For Live Sand, following Robert Metelsky
30 gallons x 1.45
= 43 Pounds of LS

*All numbers are rounded up to the lower integer.

For a 30 gallon tank, what filter would be best? Canister or HOB?
and what type of Protein Skimmer should I use?
If I've left out any equipment, please advice.
