Help I'm new!

Hi everyone. I just moved here from Bismarck, ND. Before I moved I made the hard decision to sell my tank and most of my livestock. It made moving a lot easier, but putting that much work (and money!) into something is hard to just let go for really cheap. I did send a few things to a friend in Grand Forks to keep for me until I get going again. Once we get stabilized here I'd like to set up a new tank and get started again....although it will probably be a nano since we live in an apartment. I was just wondering if there are any good saltwater stores here and if I could see some pictures of your guy's tanks! (or maybe a new thread could be started for that?)

Casey

First off welcome to the area... Second off... You happened to be posting at a perfect time as we actually are having a local meeting IN Lacrosse this weekend... This would be a perfect chance for you to meet some of the members of our local club. If you would like to see what my tank looks like I have a tank build thread here on our club page... or you can go to my personal picture site at:

http://s99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Water%20Setup/

If you are curious about the upcoming meeting go here:
http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=106493

Might be worth your time to go as you will be able to see some of the corals and such we have around our area... As well as here about some places that are good and not-so-good in our area as far as buying/selling points for fish stores.

Welcome again,

Jason

Welcome,
As Jason said, there is a meeting on Sunday we would love to have you join us. We are pretty informal, and just started meeting a year or so ago. We generally rotate around to members house...though we don't have an official membership/dues etc. We have members with newly established/transplanted 220g(is that right Brian?) all the way down to 30-60g tanks. Lots of variety, softies, lps, sps, etc. We have a pretty good knowledge base and are happy to help any way we can. There is lots of fragging of corals amongst ourselves for cheap stocking, with some group buys in the works to get more variety in our mix. There are a few local shops, but nothing that I personally am crazy about...OldeTown Pets in north LaX, MarineLand in Onalaska, fish at petco. There are a few great shops in Madison, but I personally have had good luck getting livestock (fish & inverts mostly) online.
I have a few pics in my photogallery.

I buy most of my stuff either online or from Olde Towne Pets.

Here's a pic of my old tank (125 gal) that I just took down a month ago.

And my new 220gal tank

Updated pics will be showing up very shortly in my build thread once I get the plastic off of the front of the tank and new light bulbs installed.

Welcome to trt, I look forward to meeting you in the future. I go to Olde Towne for most of my livestock, he can get almost anything in if you ask. There are a lot of people in the area that are willing to help, and share their knowledge.

He can get anything as long as you ask him about 400 times lol... I asked him 3 times already to order me a purple tang and an achilles tang... I've kinda given up on asking him. But, yes he probably has the best selection in our area as far as SW fish and corals go.

Sorry I didn't make it to the meeting. Life is crazy enough living in a new state with a new job, etc..... but I have been getting the reef bug again lately. Hopefully in the next couple months I will be able to get something going. Still thinking small at this point....don't have a tank yet and I'm not sure how much equipment I have left over, but as soon as the Christmas bills are paid off I'd like to start getting parts here and there. i"m looking forward to meeting some people and getting back into the hobby/addiction.

So I'm thinking a 20L might be a good tank to get. They are pretty cheap and it would be easy to light it since it's so shallow. Does anyone have any experience with this size tank for a reef? I think my 250w mh pendant might be overkill for it though, so I'd have to find different lighting....and a different skimmer....I only have an AquaC Urchin and I'm not planning on running a sump.

A 20L is not a bad tank it may/ will really limit your choices in fish and corals. The 250MH will be too much for a 20L. You could really get away with using PC, VHO, or T5s. They will produce less heat and with what you could probably sell your MH for you could buy a nice used lighting system or DIY project. My thought is go as a big as you can/ want so you are not changing your mind 6mo from now and then buying all new equipment. Keep us posted on your plains and hopefully we’ll meet you soon.
