I just had a great discussion with Acroholic about using pickling lime for kalk drip and we agree that its not worth skimping on the kalkwasser. Most of us buy $50+ corals and to skimp on the kalk does not make sense. There is just too much that can go wrong with using something that isnt meant for our reef tanks. I suggest buying seachem kalkwasser. Its much lighter, finer and mixes better than any picking lime and its intended for reef tank use

Hey Teach;

You can get picking lime at Winn Dixie located at the intersection of Baymeadwows and Powers. Just around the corner from your work.

Look for Ball picking lime. Just bought 3 cans last week and there was still some there. It is FDA certified.

I have been using Pickling Lime for years and with out any problems. I know many other experienced reefers use it as well. Although I agree it is not as good/pure as Seachem. It turns light brown in the Kalkwasser after a while. I just remove the bottom brown kalkwasser and start fresh. You can find Pickling lime at Winn Dixie and more likely found in the out lining areas of Jacksonville and not as much as in town. If I see it I will let you know. One thing Kalkwasser does percipitate impurities and that is in part what you have turning brown on the bottom of your Kalk reactor.

This is a good read on pickling lime.

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/20...hf/index.php#3

Ball, Warner, ESV, Seachem, and Mrs. Wages all clam to be FDA certified.

Ball, Mrs.Wages and Seachem also clam to be FCC (Food Commercial Codex) certified.

John,
I looked at the store by Atlantis, and couldn't find it. Is it by the mason jars?

I can give you 2 cans to hold you over if you need it. Just replace when you can.

I wouldnt think you can argue effectively against pickling lime when it is food quality. What impurities are you worried about?

Food quality just means that any impurities that it contains can be passed harmlessly by the human digestive system.

That said, I have never had any issues with Ball's or Ms. Wages.

Also, will trade a frag or two, if someone brings me a couple containers/lbs. I haven't found anyone carrying it in Orange Park.

Hi Rob,

I will bring in 2 containers today. Teach I also have a few you can have if needed. I always keep 6 or 7 cans around because I have found them to be stocked in the stores on a seasonal bases. They are used for canning and that is more popular in the spring and summer.

Also, it is best to look at the rual area stores. Not all winn dixie stores carry it. I went by Harvey's in Green Cove yesterday and they must have 50 cans.
