A good little pump for the money featured

Installation and Operation Installation is simple, place it and plug it in. One of the things I really like about the Rio is all the attachments that come with them. These attachments provide all sorts of ways to direct the flow or control the speed of output. However, there are no instructions on just what all of them are for so you have to guess or get creative. The insert that comes with the box has cleaning instructions and safety information, but nothing about the attachments.

Performance vs. Expectations For some reason Rio pumps tend to get looked down on in the hobby, perhaps because they aren't fancy looking or hyped, but they do work, and they last a long time as well.

I don't know about all Rio pumps, but the ones I have are all magnetically driven as well. This makes them last longer, easier to clean, and if needed (I never have) to replace the propeller. If you've ever owned a Whisper filter by Tetra, these work on the same principle as the motor on those do.

The question of whether or not they produce enough flow or not is a simple one, just look on the box at the gallons per hour rating. I've never had an issue with that. They do not, however, have very much lifting power. I wanted to use one for an auto-top-off and the Rio I purchased simply would not lift the water into the tank (no sump), I got a more powerful model, and it wouldn't either.

Small Rio pumps are great to hide behind life rock to keep hard to reach areas free of detritus. I would not, however, use a Rio for the same thing I use a Koralia but they have plenty of other uses.

For example, when I mix a batch of salt I dump in three Rio pumps into the container and let it do the mixing. I then use one of the attachments that came with the pump to hood a small hose to it and use this to fill my 5 gallon jugs with the water.

Value for money Since Rio pumps are so affordable and flexible I think an aquarist gets good value out of them.

Customer Support I've not had to call customer support or email but have used the web site and just like the insert that comes with the pump I found it lacking in useful information. However, since there isn't much to learn with these pumps I didn't mind.

Liked about it 1. Rio pumps are affordable and can be used for salt or fresh water systems so they are flexible
2. Come with plenty of attachments that can alter their use creatively
3. Easy to clean
4. Sealed motor means less heat and that the motor won't get clogged

Didn't like 1. The magnetic drive shaft may need to be cleaned from time to time in order to insure consistent operation. Small inverts (tube worms) and sponges (pineapple especially) can get into the shaft and stop it from spinning. This is easily cleaned up with minimal effort but can be an issue if this is the only pump you have.

A cheap alternative. featured

Installation and Operation Instillation of these pumps for the most part is pretty simple. It is ready to run right out of the box but you do get a bunch of miscellaneous fittings and gadgets with these pumps. I used a few of them early in to this hobby for return and in tank flow. They are OK pumps but just not very high quality. After a while to do become noisy and require constant cleaning. As a return they are ok but they are very big and bulky as a power head.

Performance vs. Expectations When I got this pump I honestly did not know what to expect I was new to the hobby. I thought they were doing a good job for me but as a learned more and saw other tank I learned that these pumps are just not as good as many other pumps out there and eventually I got rid of them. If your looking for a inexpensive pump give one a try.

Value for money They are pretty chap and like with most things you get what you pay for.
The do perform well for the most part but for just a little more you can buy a much better pump.

Customer Support I never has any use for customer support.

Liked about it They are cheap. very affordable at under $40 usually
The are versatile. you can use them as return pumps or in the tank as a power head and they come with lots of attachments.

Didn't like They are pretty bulky in the tank as a power heads.
They do require regular maintenance they without may fail or at least become quite noisy.

Rio 1100

Installation and Operation Install is simple, plug and play really. I have mine as a return pump with a 4 foot lead and all i had to do was put on the rubber hosing and plug it in. Really quite simply. Operation is simple as well with a cleaning everynow and then and plug right back in.

Performance vs. Expectations Performance is as described. I have mine as a return pump with a 4 foot lead and it still pumps about 400GPH. I also have a smaller model that i have had for 4 years now with no issues. Very Very quiet as well.

Value for money I would call this the honda civic of aquarium pumps.... good, reliable, inexpensive, but no bells and whistles, nor is it very aesthetically pleasing.

Customer Support No need so far :-)

Liked about it Very quiet machine. Runs quietly. Easy to operate and install.

Didn't like The appearance leaves room for desire, i would never want to put a Rio in a Display tank.

Great little pump

Installation and Operation Regular cleanings are required to keep it performing. Instructions are crystal clear but not required easily comes apart.

Performance vs. Expectations Works as advertised, sort of. I used it for water circulations in my tank and it needs to be cleaned more then any other pump i have owned. I know use it for water changes. Which it works flawless for. After changing out the water I can clean it with a fresh water rinse and I am done. Impeller has not failed yet. I had an impeller fail and need to be replaced when used all the time. Crude builds up fast.

Value for money Worth my money now that I know whats its best application is. I pump water up about 3 feet with ease from mixed salt water into the tank.

Liked about it Cost is fairly cheap compared to other pumps. Small in size.

Didn't like Since then are small in size (square) would of been nice to use in the tank but the maintenance is not worth it.
