fair priced, good quality
| Installation and Operation |
The installation of this powerhead is as easy at is gets. It is very versatile in the way it comes with several options you as the consumer have to set it up and operate. The most popular way it is mounted in my opinion is the traditional three suction cup style. Very quiet and a low flow unit.
|
| Performance vs. Expectations |
I was expecting a little more flow, but it does what it says it will do. In my case, I am using it to power my phosphate reactor and does the job just fine. I have had several different sized maxi jet powerheads through the years, and they are hard to break. They require less cleaning maintenance than other brands in my experience with other brands as well.
|
| Value for money |
This product is very good for the price that you pay. If you use the comparison shopping tool at "TheReefTank.com", this is a very inexpensive piece of equipment to get a hold of. Maxi Jet makes very quality made powerheads at reasonable to get prices.

| Liked about it |
There are a few things I like about this pump.
I like the price.
I like the easiness of the "plug and play".
I like how these pumps are easily modded to be more effective.
I also like the amount of power they use which is little to none.
|
| Didn't like |
I don't like pumps that use "suction cup" style of mounting because over time they will lose the suction and create a mess if you aren't home when this happens. In my case, I am using it hooked up with tubing connected to my reactor, so I don't think this will be an issue.

cheap, but almost too weak
| Installation and Operation |
These pumps are very easy to install. They come with a few different mounting options, though most of the time you'll find folks use the suction cup mounts. Simply clip that mounting bracket in place and stick the suction cups against the glass. To operate the unit, it's only a matter of plugging it in. There's really almost no overhead of getting this unit fired up.
|
| Performance vs. Expectations |
Compared to the other maxi jet pumps, this one really doesnt do much for me. You really have to have a tiny system for this to provide you any purpose. In terms of flow, you're better of investing in the 600, or better yet the 900 or 1200. And comparing it to the cost of those other maxijets, there's really not a financial part of that decision. It does work well and should last you for years, but I dont think it's worth buying this one over the others.
|
| Value for money |
As just mentioned, I don't think this has a very high value. It has such low output that you may as well just purchase one of the other pumps. I really think the 900 or 1200 are the only ones worth using, but I've certainly had my share of the 400s in the past. They all still work, but I just dont have an application suited for using them.

| Liked about it |
These are robust pumps that could be used in many applications if it had the right flow. They will work for years and don't require a lot of maintenance, nor do they require much overhead of getting them installed.
|
| Didn't like |
A number of cons on this pump. As already mentioned, it has really low flow. Also, the suction cup mounts are not that great at holding up over time, and I've read many reports of them falling off the tank and landing in the sandbed, only to cause major problems. And finally, it would be nice if they provided a bit different output shaft to attach hoses or other small plumbing features for using them in other purposes.

Very good buy
| Installation and Operation |
I had to attach the modification kit, which took 5 minutes, then attached the sure-grip which took another 2 minutes, then attached it to the glass and plugged it in. A "no-brainer". Instructions were helpful. No problems after 2 months of operation. Monthly vinegar bath for cleaning.
|
| Performance vs. Expectations |
It performs as expected.

| Value for money |
I got it on sale at DFS, $5 off, a super deal.

Price, ease of set-up and size (it's not very large). I will buy another in the future if I need another pump. Also it had low power usage.
|
| Didn't like |
I wish that it could be attached to the glass with suction cups from different sides

not the best pump in the world for a tank
| General |
An OK pump to mix saltwater but not the type of flow a reef tank needs. It can be modded to make diffuse flow. |
| Liked about it |
inexpensive and reasonably dependable. There are modifications that can make it more suitable for a circulation pump.
|
| Didn't like |
bulky for the gph, directed flow. Better suited for a salt mix agitator than for use within your tank
