Mag 18- Great Investment
| General |
Very well made pump; just be careful when taking them apart to do maintenance and the pump will last you a very long time.
This is a great choice for a return pump to great water preasure. |

Nicely made return pump for fresh or salt water. Quiet running, easy to operate, no moving parts (other than impeller), and they do not take up a lot of room in your sump. Heat output is minimal compared to other pumps. I have run them internally and externally in my set-ups for a number of years now on my salt water tanks. I also have not met anyone locally that had one just stop working, they are built tough.

There are only two parts I do not like about the pump. First is the cover for the impeller. It is a nice design but, I would like to see them made of a stronger material as I tend to break them and have to order new ones. The second is the screw threads. If you over tighten them they strip easily or break off the pump.

Mag 24
| General |
I figure I am right at between 1850 and 2000g/hr accounting for head loss. I have an all glass 210 and am replacing a Mag 12 as my main return pump. I was looking for more water turn over and I got it. What I also got was a very noisy pump. I really like MAG drive pumps in general, but when you get to this size range, buyers beware. I do not have a fish room, so everything is below the tank. My living room is all ceramic tile; to there is no carpet to dampen any sound. The noise this pump made was like an unexpected house guest that would not leave. I was about to purchase a Quiet One 9000 for about the same price (and half the wattage) when I found a way to quiet the pump: I placed a block of Styrofoam under the pump, some vinyl hose between the pump and glass and Abra Kadabra! I also purchased a 100Micron sock for my return lines and what a difference!
Granted, the tank is not as quiet as before using the Mag 12, but the results out weigh the volume. If I had to do it again, I would have purchased the Quiet One 9000 or even the Quiet One 1400. They claim to have less than 45db. Nice pump if you have a fish room AWAY from earshot!

Mag 18 Review

I have used my Mag18s for about a year now and never had any problems out of them but they do use a lot of electricity compared to other pumps in the same category with it. |
