Good and Bad
| Installation and Operation |
Installation was a breeze and took only minutes. I also bought the magnetic pump holders to eliminate the constant suction cup replacement and pump falling into the sand bed problem.
|
| Performance vs. Expectations |
Performance was great and as advertised. However, expectation was was below what I wanted. There was constant chatter upon startup when used with the red sea wave maker. It seems that the maxijet impeller can spin either way to operate, but the shur flow must only spin one way. The chatter is caused by the impeller's propeller shaped water mover hitting against a plastic stop. This stop prevents it from turning in reverse and sucking the water into the pump instead of pushing it away. The chatter was so bad as to be annoying. And mechanically, it chattered away the plastic stop causing the impeller to turn in reverse, and causing the water to flow into the pump. This product needs some additional development. I did like the concept however...

| Value for money |
Good value for the money. Not recommended for use with any type wavemaker electronic controller. If left on all the time, product works as expected, but still with minor random impeller chatter.
|
| Customer Support |
Great customer support. When I advised the company that my impeller stops had been worn away, I was sent new cages (4), one for each pump, which arrived promptly.

Liked: 1> Water flow, 2> Ease of installation, 3> Sorry, couldn't find # three.

| Didn't like |
Don't like: 1> Impeller chatter. I can't belived that this was not heard during research and design and field testing. I mean hopefully this was done and not just rushed to market. 2> Lack of research and design. Perhaps this works best with new pumps, and even that is OK if the customer was told up front. 3> Will not work with wavemakler. I have run a red sea wavemaker for over 10 years without problems...which is why I like maxi-jets...no chatter upon start and re-start. These things chattered constantly! However, as a concession and test, I removed the red sea wavemaker from my setup and just let the pumps run. Still chattered sporadically and whenver the voltage changes slightly..like when the halides came on or the chiller came on. Apparently not designed for a wavemaker. Water volume was fine in my 250g tank, but in smaller tanks, the 1600 may be a bit much for corals. I have returned the maxijets back to they way they were and re-installed the wavemaker. The parts went into my spare part drawer. Kept the magnetic pump holders...they worked great!

Has to be the best value in reef keeping.

I would suggest this for anyone who is in need of some real flow at a great price. |

This has to be one of the best "bang for the buck" products in our hobby. The install is super easy, price is extremely reasonable, and the flow it enables is absolutely amazing.

Inexpensive High Flow Upgrade
| General |
This is a good upgrade for those cost conscious hobbists.
A maxijet 900-1200 can be upgraded from 250-300 GPH to around 1200-1500 GPH with this simple mod.
I hope that Algae-Free considers ceramic impeller posts to make this mod more durable.
The magnetic holders are a must if considering this upgrade since the vibration generated will cause the suction cup holder for the pump to dislodge easily. |

Did work as advertised.
Flow dramatically increased on Maxijet pumps.
Can be used on wavemaker.

| Didn't like |
Steel impellers rust to easily.
Impellers need to be replaced every 6-9 months.
Use of wavemaker with pump hastens impeller wear.
