Too Good to be True featured

Installation and Operation Installation took me all of 30 seconds to install this mod. The instructions were on the box and a little vague as to exactly how if goes, but anyone who is a reefer should be able to figure it out. It is extremely easy to maintain, just a twist and the guard comes off to perform maintenance on the impeller.

Performance vs. Expectations The product performs exactly as described, if not better. However, the chances are high that either the shaft or impeller will be out of balance which will cause your power-head to vibrate and/or be very loud. I expected to have a quiet, high flow power-head, but wound up removing the mod. The shaft could have been ceramic and the impellers could have been of much better quality. The suction cups/mount that was provided also seems on the weak side for the amount of force the unit produces.

Value for money If you don't mind noise, it is a great buy!

Customer Support I have not dealt with the company, not going to squabble over $15...

Liked about it Mega amounts of flow that is dispersed over a large area.
Easy to install.
Easy to clean.
Multiple impellers to choose from.

Didn't like The 'cheapness' of the impellers...
The noise/vibrations from cheap parts.
Suction cups/mount don't seem strong enough to hold unit because of force produced.

Decent upgrade for the price featured

Installation and Operation Installation was simple. The instructions were a little lacking, however most of the assembly is self explanatory, and I was up and running in a few minutes. I tried them on both MJ-500 and MJ-1000 (equivalent to MJ-600 and MJ-1200 respectively), and they ran fine on both.
The mounting brackets were a little hard to get into the guides on the actual MJ body, but the bracket slides out from the suction cup base easily, removing for maintenance shouldn't be an issue if you can take the whole pump out.

Performance vs. Expectations I didn't go into this purchase with many expectations. I had a few MJ's lying around, and for the price I figured it was worth at least trying the sureflow mod out.
I used a brand new Koralia Evolution 1400 to compare the flow rates. With the smaller propeller (advertised at 1600gph) I found they penetrated slightly less than the Koralia, however the field of flow seemed to have a larger diameter, so 1500-1600gph might be a good estimate, with the penetration similar to a 1200gph Koralia.
The larger propeller certainly moved a lot more water, and penetrates much deeper than the Koralia 1400 (by nearly a foot), with a similar field of flow to the smaller propeller. The flow from this large propeller is amazing honestly, though running the larger propeller caused some problems which I will detail in the don't like section.
The brackets it came with support it well, and give the unit amazingly free movement. The options for positioning the flow is better than any other pump I have used.

Value for money For the money, this is an incredible mod. It turns an MJ (one of the more affordable and higher quality pumps on the market) into the equivalent of a much more expensive propeller based circulation pump. It is also fairly small for the water it is pushing, though the way the mount works, it ends up being less conspicuous because it is usually extending out a bit from the wall.

Customer Support I have had no dealings with this company, and haven't needed to contact any sort of support.

Liked about it If you have the MJ's already, this is quite a bargain compared to buying new (or even used) propeller circulation pumps. Even having to buy the MJ's, these are still a bit cheaper than equivalent new powerheads. I liked the option of changing propeller size based on the amount of flow needed, makes the pumps much more versatile. I also really like the wider field of flow out of them. They create really good broad currents.

Didn't like The first one I installed in an MJ-500 (equivalent to the MJ-600) with the smaller propeller, and it worked flawlessly. I then set one up on an MJ-1000 (equivalent to the MJ-1200) with the larger propeller and it chattered when I started it up. So I pulled it out, pulled out the impeller, re-assembled it all, and fired it back up and no chatter at all. I also switched the pump on and off every 3 seconds for a minute or so, and never once did it chatter on startup. I have played with them a bit, and about 1 out of 5 times I assemble them they chatter on startup, so I pull the impeller out, re-assemble it, and no noise from that point on.
the only other issues I have had have been using the large impeller. The first issue is that it simply causes monstrous amounts of flow. I really like the depth of the flow (it easily reached the full 4ft length of my tank), but even with 12" of water above and below it, it would suck air and sand about once every 2 minutes or so. It simply was too much flow for a ~24" tall tank. So I am using the smaller propellers, but wish it would penetrate as deep as the larger propeller did.
The other issue I had with the larger propeller was more an issue with the shroud the kit comes with. The slats in it are spaced much further apart than in other pumps so much smaller things can get in them. That combined with the flow the larger propeller provides makes these death traps for crabs who happen to get too close. I lost an emerald crab to it within a few hours of using the large propeller. I haven't had this issue with the smaller propeller, but the potential is still there since the slats are the same size, just that stuff isn't getting caught in the flow and sucked into the slats with the lower flow rates.

Good and Bad featured

Installation and Operation Installation was a breeze and took only minutes. I also bought the magnetic pump holders to eliminate the constant suction cup replacement and pump falling into the sand bed problem.

Performance vs. Expectations Performance was great and as advertised. However, expectation was was below what I wanted. There was constant chatter upon startup when used with the red sea wave maker. It seems that the maxijet impeller can spin either way to operate, but the shur flow must only spin one way. The chatter is caused by the impeller's propeller shaped water mover hitting against a plastic stop. This stop prevents it from turning in reverse and sucking the water into the pump instead of pushing it away. The chatter was so bad as to be annoying. And mechanically, it chattered away the plastic stop causing the impeller to turn in reverse, and causing the water to flow into the pump. This product needs some additional development. I did like the concept however...

Value for money Good value for the money. Not recommended for use with any type wavemaker electronic controller. If left on all the time, product works as expected, but still with minor random impeller chatter.

Customer Support Great customer support. When I advised the company that my impeller stops had been worn away, I was sent new cages (4), one for each pump, which arrived promptly.

Liked about it Liked: 1> Water flow, 2> Ease of installation, 3> Sorry, couldn't find # three.

Didn't like Don't like: 1> Impeller chatter. I can't belived that this was not heard during research and design and field testing. I mean hopefully this was done and not just rushed to market. 2> Lack of research and design. Perhaps this works best with new pumps, and even that is OK if the customer was told up front. 3> Will not work with wavemakler. I have run a red sea wavemaker for over 10 years without problems...which is why I like maxi-jets...no chatter upon start and re-start. These things chattered constantly! However, as a concession and test, I removed the red sea wavemaker from my setup and just let the pumps run. Still chattered sporadically and whenver the voltage changes slightly..like when the halides came on or the chiller came on. Apparently not designed for a wavemaker. Water volume was fine in my 250g tank, but in smaller tanks, the 1600 may be a bit much for corals. I have returned the maxijets back to they way they were and re-installed the wavemaker. The parts went into my spare part drawer. Kept the magnetic pump holders...they worked great!

There are better MJ mods out there...

Installation and Operation Instillation of this kit is very straight forward and easy. You simply remove the cover and impeller from your MJ1200 and replace it with the supplied prop and shroud. Operation I found to be a little noisy and inconstant. They seem to rattle around a bit ti much and often I even had the shroud come off in the tank.

Performance vs. Expectations They for the most part do perform well and provide tons of flow wit a nice wide pattern.
I did not expect much from this pump. It was the first MJ mod I got and with the price so low I thought it might be cheap. It was better than I thought it would but but still fell that the other MJ Mod out there is just a better design.

Value for money They are cheap, very cheap you do get a ton of flow from them but I have found thet the ruber bushings on the prop shaft fails quickly and I am replacing them often.

Customer Support Never need any customer support for this product.

Liked about it It did have a lot of flow and a nice wide pattern.
It was cheap but you get what you pay for.

Didn't like poorly constructed.

Worth the money

Installation and Operation Very easy to install, but note that the white impeller is for the 1200. Otherwise, your pump will make a ton of noise!!

Performance vs. Expectations Performs great.

Value for money Great for the money, but the magnet mounts are way to pricey at this point!

Liked about it I like it, but again, the magnet mounts are expensive. Plus the cord for some MJ1200's are really thick and in the way.

Didn't like Instructions letting you know that the white impeller is for the 1200!! Nothing! I had to find out from posts. Also, ...yet again...the magnet attachment is way too expensive!

Inexpensive High Flow Upgrade

General This is a good upgrade for those cost conscious hobbists.
A maxijet 900-1200 can be upgraded from 250-300 GPH to around 1200-1500 GPH with this simple mod.

I hope that Algae-Free considers ceramic impeller posts to make this mod more durable.

The magnetic holders are a must if considering this upgrade since the vibration generated will cause the suction cup holder for the pump to dislodge easily.

Liked about it Did work as advertised.
Flow dramatically increased on Maxijet pumps.
Can be used on wavemaker.

Didn't like Steel impellers rust to easily.
Impellers need to be replaced every 6-9 months.
Use of wavemaker with pump hastens impeller wear.

Has to be the best value in reef keeping.

General I would suggest this for anyone who is in need of some real flow at a great price.

Liked about it This has to be one of the best "bang for the buck" products in our hobby. The install is super easy, price is extremely reasonable, and the flow it enables is absolutely amazing.

Didn't like N/A
