Good multiple parameter test kit - don't start up a tank without it
| Comments |
The Tetratest Laborette test kit is a good value. An excellent starter kit, it gets the novice in the habit of properly testing: pH (freshwater separate from saltwater), carbonate, general hardness, ammonia, nitrite, and (calculated from chart carbon dioxide). The syringe aids exact measurement of the water sample into the graduated vial. Add reagents by drops according to clear directions, close vial with top, and shake to mix. Follow directions according to test timing and read by indirect daylight by comparing to a color chart. Other companies (i.e., Salifert) make better individual test kits for one parameter.

The kit contains basic tests especially those useful for monitoring a cycling tank. There are two test vials so you can run two tests as the same time, more efficiently using time. The syringe and graduated vials make accurate measurements easier. The test kit has enough tests to establish the novice's tank (and then individual parameter test kits should be purchased for continued testing.)

The Tetratest kit has good test for a new, cycling tank, but an established (FOWLR or reef) tank will need additional tests (i.e., calcium and nitrate) that are not in this kit. Salifert, at a higher cost, makes better test kits for specific parameters such as nitrate. A novice is guided in how to perform the test with clear directions, a syringe, and graduated vials. However the measuring of test water volume and reagent drop counting lends itself to human error for the beginner. (I think the pre-measured packets of Instant Ocean's pH test will be more accurate for the novice.)

Good starte kit
| General |
Good starter test kit for sure. I wouldn't buy again just because as you use the tests you will find you have to replace certain ones which you go through the solutions faster than others (both hardness tests). Also, now that i'm keeping corals i need to test a couple of additional parameters so this test is missing a couple of test i need. all in al, a solid test for the new aquarist. |
