decent test kit, but use algae as your guide featured

Comments Phosphate in an aquarium is usually bad news. As a big ingredient in many fertilizers, as well as something that's found in most foods (or a byproduct of fish waste), controlling phosphate is important when it comes to eliminating nuisance algae and ensuring proper coral health for good growth and good colors. The problem, however, is that it's a terrible challenge to measure all sources of phosphate in a tank, and no hobby level test kit will give a good idea of the real phosphate story in your tank (example; phosphate trapped in substrate won't be measured by a water test kit, and this kit measures inorganic soluble orthophosphate, which is only a small part of the overall phosphate story). Due to all this, I find this kit (and most po4 kits) to be pointless. If you have algae issues, that's information enough that you have too much phosphate in the tank, regardless of what the test kits reveals.

Liked about it This is a relatively inexpensive test kit and it's easy to use. The color variance between the different test results are pretty easy to interpret, though not quite with the range they indicate (meaning a difference between 0 and 0.5ppm is easy, anything closer than that is a challenge). The instructions are clear and the product comes with everything you need.

Didn't like There's nothing inherently wrong with the kit or test itself, however I would like phosphate philosophy to be better described with the information provided. Knowing that the kit only tests for a small number of possible phosphate sources would make it easier for users to interpret the results and know better what decisions need to be made regarding tank maintenance.

Don't bother with this test!

Comments I purchased this test early on in my SW tank days, so didn't really know what to look for in a test. While this test was inexpensive, it is also basically worthless. The lowest measure of phosphate it can read is "0.25." We are looking to keep phosphates much less than this, so this reading as the smallest measure of the test is not meaningful. I used this test many times, thinking, "Oh, I'm at the lowest reading, it must be okay." When I encountered a large cyano outbreak, I found out that 0.25 is not even close to where I want to be for my tank to be healthy.

Liked about it 1) inexpensive
2) readily available at lfs
3) easy to use

Didn't like 1) doesn't read phosphate at a level low enough to be meaningful to most marine aquarists

Not the greatest, but it works...

Comments Product is simple to use, though it's difficult to discern the color and match it up to the color indicator chart.

Liked about it The product is simple to use.

Didn't like The problem I have with this test kit is that it is impossible to match your test tube to a color on the reference card. The difference between zero and the next level is such a subtle change in color that it's almost impossible to tell if you have any phosphate in your tank or not. Because phosphate is something that one wants to be able to measure accurately to the smallest possible level, this kit is practically worthless unless you have a very high level of phosphates in your tank.

Phosphate test kit!

Comments I picked this kit up from lfs for about 15.00 usd. Easy to understand instructions similar to calcium test kit.

Liked about it Easy to read directions

Didn't like Not very sure of the accuracy due the color coded chart which is easy to get incorrect when testing.

Great and inexpensive test kits

General I use API kit regularly. They are cheap, quick and easy to use. To be safe I do also test with another higher quality tests just to keep a closer eye on my water parameters.

All in all for the proce and ease of use they are great tests!

Liked about it cheap
easy to use
clear consice instructions.

Didn't like they may not be as accurate as some of the higher end tests but what PO3 test kit is accurate?

I probably wouldn't buy it again.

General I tested 3 separate water sources and had the same result each time. Water samples were taken from a 6 stage RO/DI filter, an established reef tank and from the kitchen sink.

Liked about it Easy to use

Didn't like Unsure of its accuracy
