I view nitrite to be similar to ammonia, though not as critical. It's only present at the beginning of a tank's life, and it doesnt need to be measured for routine, long term maintenance. On top of this, nitrite is not as big of a concern as ammonia to tank inhabitants (though it's presence is certainly a concern). As with most of the API test kits, this is an easy product to use, but the idea of testing nitrite is questionable in my experience and does not warrant much of a useful result.

As mentioned, this kit is very simple to use, simply add a few drops of the reactant to 5ml of water, shake, and wait 5 minutes for the results. It's cheap, and nitrite information may help if you're early into your aquarium career, want experience on water testing, are looking for a detailed log of water parameters in a new tank, or are absolutely without patience for adding livestock to your tank (the last bullet is mostly in jest, but to be honest if you follow the simple notion of allowing the tank to cycle for 6-8 weeks and then add livestock very slowly, you'll never need to test nitrite).

The color variance on the results is very hard to follow, especially for values under 1ppm. This is rather disappointing for a kit, as folks generally want a precise result from the product. If you're looking for just very generic information, this kit is ok, but I don't care for it personally.

Love API kits...

I use API kits for all my tests. This kit is very simple to use and accurate enough for all my tests. Kit comes with both salt and freshwater testing and you get a lot of tests in one kit. I'm the guy who knows I have to test water but hate to and this kit makes it quick and easy.

Very simple and quick to use. You get a lot of tests in one kit. You fill tube to line with tank water, and chemicals, wait 5 minutes and read color chart.

Easiest test to do
| General |
When it come to tests such as nitrite, I feel that the API kit is more than adequate. In my opinion there is no reason to spend any more money than necessary. You do not want any nitrites and this test kit can easily confirm that. |

Great and inexpensive test kits
| General |
I use API kit regularly. They are cheap, quick and easy to use. To be safe I do also test with another higher quality tests just to keep a closer eye on my water parameters.
All in all for the proce and ease of use they are great tests! |
