Easty kit, but bad choice for good pH information featured

Comments Test kits for pH are just a bad idea in my experience. If you read the "didnt like" section of this review, you'll see why test kits are prone to error. As a result of this, folks who don't have the insight required to fully understand what this kit is capable of often make decisions based on the test results that have negative impacts on their tank. On top of this, pH is not that critical, the acceptable range is almost as wide as the range of this test kit. As long as the tank is within 7.8-8.4, there's really nothing to worry about. There's also a diurnal swing of pH throughout the day, usually coinciding with the photoperiod. Because this isnt clearly indicated in the instructions, folks tend to not know what this kit is measuring and how to interpret the results. In my opinion, your much better of not spending money on this kit and investing in a nice pH probe with a monitor or controller.

Liked about it This is a cheap kit that is very easy to use. pH is measured by adding 3 drops of the reactant to 5ml of water. Very straight forward. The color chart is easy to read, and the color variance is high, making it a easy to measure the differences between the colors.

Didn't like The fidelity, repeatability, and accuracy of this test kit makes it very hard to justify for long term use. The range of the test is from 7.4-8.8 in 0.2 increments. Compared to other means of measuring pH, this is definitely considered low-fi. Another issue with using test kits is that many things affect pH, including mixing water. If you stir water after you drop in the reactant, this disturbance could easily add oxygen to the water in the vial, thereby increasing the overall pH and giving a bad result. Finally, and as a result of the last thought, the accuracy of this kit is not great. Better to use a recently calibrated probe as earlier pointed out.

A pretty basic PH test. featured

Comments Ph is make more critical then I really think it is. don;t get me wrong maintaining proper PH is vital for the health of any aquarium but it seem like all to often people are freaking out about either high or low Ph. the truth if that although the "normal" range is about 8.2 anything from 7.8 to 8.5 it still very acceptable. Now that being said you do not want a PH swing of 7.8 to 8.5 in a short time. Stability is key. If your tank runs at 7.9 all the time that is fine as long as it is stable.

API make testing PH simple ans super easy with only one liquid to drops simply fill the vial add then drops and compare the results to the color chart. Very simple but not very accurate. The only way you will get consistent accurate results is with a PH monitor.

Liked about it These test are very cheap
Super simple to use. By far one of the easiest test out there.
clear concise instructions.

Didn't like accuracy is questionable.
I would go with a PH monitor over this test any day, But I do still use them from time to time just to ensure my PH probe in close.

API, good test kit...

Comments I use API test kits for everything. I like this kit because it is very simple to use and you get a lot of test per kit. I have tried the dry tablet kits and much prefer the dropper method. Just fill test tube to line with tank water, add drops and read color chart, cannot go wrong.

Liked about it Easy to use. Inexpensive compared to some kits on the market. You get a lot of tests per kit which I like because it keeps me from having to make another trip to replace it as often.

Didn't like Can't say that there is anything that I don't like. I have heard that they are not as accurate as some kits but I have not had any problems. If I get a reading that I do not think is right I will cross check it with another kit.

Good to have around

Comments API makes a good product. Although maybe not as accurate as the higher end test kits, its plenty good for the hobbyist. I always use the API test first. The API test are easy to use and easy to read. I have some more expensive test kits but I will always have an API kit too.

Liked about it Inexpensive
Easy to use
Easy to read
They last a long time

Didn't like No complaints at all.
