A cheap kit with limited fidelity

In my opinion, understanding the alkalinity part of your tank's water parameters is easily the most important factor for stony coral growth. Alkalinity and calcium are the backbone of calcification, and alkalinity is used at a rate of 1dkh for every 20ppm of calcium. Getting clear results from alkalinity tests is vital for proper tank husbandry, and unfortunately this kit doesnt quite provide the fidelity I want for long term tank maintenance.

This it is relatively cheap, and the instructions are clear. There is plenty of detail and good tips for performing the test, and it's very repeatable. There arent any real negatives with the performance of the test.

The biggest issue with this test kit is simply the range of results. By only providing a range in 1dkh steps, it's very hard to use this kit to understand daily tank uptake of alkalinity. Other test kits, such as elos and salifert, provide much clearer results, usually closer to 0.3 dkh steps. As a result, I do not prefer this test kit and would recommend another product if you want explicit information about your tank.

I think that API gets over looked because it is so readily available and not as costly as some of the "high end" test brands. i'm happy with the accuracy and the test are always easy to perform. this one is no exception, the color change indicating the reading is easily recognized

Leaky test tube covers are annoying, i keep a towel over the cap during the period of shaking to cause the chemical reaction

easy to use easy to tell color change i compared this kit to a much more expensive seachem kit and it was fairly accurate
