No good for reef Great for fish only!

Comments I have used crushed coral for years in my fish only tanks and never had any problems. So when I decided to setup a reef tank I thought why not? well the problem with crushed coral in a reef is that it traps too much debris. That is bad in a reef. Detritus settling in a reef tank can create Nitrates and even too much can cause Ammonia. In a reef stick with finer sand.

In my fish only tanks I actually used under gravel filters with power heads and bacterial growing within the crushed coral was my primary filtration. For a fish only it's great lot of surface area for bacteria the thrive.

Liked about it It's great for a fish only tank.
Lots of surface are for beneficial bacteria.
It's much cheaper than sand or live sand.

Didn't like It really is not as nice and clean looking as finer sands.
If the crushed coral is too large it can be hard to clean with a vacuum.

Detritus trap!

Comments Crushed coral isnt a very good substrate in my opinion. It traps too much detritus and that can cause high nitrates, which is never good because they can cause harm to fish, inverts, and corals. This product claims to be alive with benificial bacteria but no bacteria can survive in the bag for too long. Over time when the crushed coral is introduced to the tank it will become alive. I like the look of crushed coral but its not very good in fish tanks.

Liked about it The look of it.

Didn't like Detritus trap

Good for some applications

General If you are using this in a fish only, and you plan on siphoning out your sand bed weekly, then this is for you. If you have a reef, this is a bad substrate to choose. Its hard to clean without siphoning the substrate directly through a gravel vac. Its nice too look at, but causes unsightly algae blooms due to deitritus build up.

Liked about it Price
It looks great!

Didn't like Clogs up easily
Hard to clean
fish are not crazy about it, neither are the snails.
