Caribsea Arag-Alive Fiji Pink 10 lb
|
Fiji Pink - This soft pink colored, 100% aragonite substrate is a good intermediate sand size product. The precise 0.5 - 1.5mm grain size combines some of the animal friendly properties of fine sand such as ingestability...

adequate sand, but not your best choice
| Comments |
This is a decent sand for some applications, but it's not my preference. The arag alive fiji pink is marketed as sand already populated with denitrifying bacteria with a grain size of 0.5mm to 1.5mm. It is good for burrowers and other sand sifters and should do well in most tanks.

This fiji pink sand does have a nice color, and it is nice that it already has some bacteria in it upon first introducing it to the tank. The grain size is ok, but not my favorite. I think there are better products available for starting a tank. If you're just using one bag of this to populate your system, that's understandable, but if you're using it in bulk I think it's more of a waste.

I don't think this is a very good value for the money. Pound for pound, it's going to be more dense than dry sand. In other words, you're going to get less weight for the volume, as this is shipped with some water in it, meaning it will require more of this to cover your tank. Also, when buying live sand, there's no telling what exactly is in it. While hitchhikers arent terribly common with live sand, they're not out of the question and often arent anything you were hoping for. The grain size may be a bit small for high flow applications, so that's something to consider. Finally, the cost of this product is pretty high compared to the same dry sand. Considering that with patience any dry sand will be live in a matter of months, it seems silly to spend the money on this product that will only end up as the same as the dry version with time.

Save your money get the dry Fiji Pink.

Caribsea makes this sand in both "alive" and dry.
When I first set up my tank I used soem fry and some live sand. What a waste of money! Some might say that live sand allows you to have a instant reef tank. WRONG! do not do that. there just is not enough bacterial in the bag to sustain a cockroach.
Developing the proper bacteria for sustaining a marine Eco system takes time if you do not have patience you should not be in this hobby.
now on the the aragonite. I did like this sand It's just the right size at about .5-1.5mm. It can handle serious flow without a dust storm. Very similar to reef floor special but a little smaller and with traces of pink. If you can live without the pink I would suggest the Reef Floor Special
Because Live sand is only a gimmick I gave this a poor rating but in the dry version I liked it much better.

The grain size of the sand is goo maybe just a little small but works well for many different tanks and flow patterns.

I do not like this in the "live" version. It's just a waste of money.
Clouded the water horribly but that did not hatter much since it was a new tank.
The price. Save your money and get the dry version!

Good looking sand
| Comments |
I picked up a bag of this sand when I first started my tank. It has a really nice color and is packed wet so it does not create a lot of dust when put into the aquarium. I dont like that the company says it is "alive" because any benifical bacteria would be dead because it has nothing to eat. Over all dry sand is a better choice because you pay a lot more money for the "alive" stuff when its not even alive.

Great sand, but saying it is "alive" is a joke

I love the Arag-Alive sands for one reason: NO DUST!

Fiji Pink is a pretty sand with a good grain size. Since it is packed damp, you don't have to worry about it causing a dust storm in your tank.

Excellent product
| General |
I used 3 20lbs. bags in my 75. It has a nice size grain, not too big, not too small. Gives the tank a wonderful appearance. I definitely recommend this sand. |
