Why didn't I know about this before? featured

Comments I've used Instant Ocean (IO) salt mix for years, exclusively for the last 6. I just recently saw Instant Ocean Reef Crystals on the shelf at my local fish store and decided to get a small box for my next water change. I was honestly shocked at the change in my corals after just one water change. I decided to switch. Since I've noticed better polyp extension, brighter colors, and faster growth on all my corals, especially my SPS.

This is a little more than twice the cost of regular Instant Ocean but the results were well worth it in my thinking. Instant Ocean is a good salt in my experience and I am not knocking it, my corals grew quite well and were very attractive, but the change is evident in the faster growth.

One of the things I like about this salt is how well and easy it is to mix. One half cup is 1 gallon at 1.025. There seems to be very little variation to this.

Liked about it 1. Just like regular IO this is very easy to mix.
2. Even though it's more than regular IO it is still affordable for the 50 pound bucket.
3. Promotes coral growth, color, and overall health.

Didn't like 1. Even though the price is worth it, I don't like paying more than I have been. Oh well!

The perfect salt for a 'Run-of-the-Mill' Reef tank

Comments This product does exactly what it was designed to do. With a similar mix to Instant Ocean, except with a higher percentage of trace minerals, this salt lends itself to be useful in almost any style reef tank. The price for this salt is defiantly reasonable compared to others and how this one out-performs them. As a recent arrival to the saltwater scene, I originally started with IO (Instant Ocean) but after seeing a fellow reefers tank on this I slowly transitioned over to this mix. Corals had relatively little reaction to the transition and once I was running it 100%, all corals defiantly picked up both in coloration and in general health and appearance.

Liked about it 1. Contains higher amounts of trace elements that a reef requires
2. Fast Dissolving
3. Readily available compared to some other brands

Didn't like 1. Usually end up pouring bag into a bucket for storage purposes
2. Can clump if left in the bag

Pretty good stuff!!

Comments Performs as advertised. I have soft coral mostly in my tank and this stuff has kept them going strong. The price is pretty reasonable compared to comprable salts. Good value for the money.

Liked about it Fast dissolving
With just soft corals it needs no supplements
Reasonable price

Didn't like The bag can be hard to store and handle compared to the bucket.
With more needy corals you will need to add supplements.
Everything else is pretty good.

Nice salt, good size bag

Comments I've been using reef crystals for the since 2005 and I've never had a complaint. It works well and needs little supplementation (if any at all), the 50 gallon bags are convenient. I do prefer to buy the buckets or 200 gallon boxes due to the volume that I use, but on smaller tanks these bags are not a bad deal.

Liked about it Good size, great salt. I like that it dissolves quickly and that it has a good calcium and alkalinity balance.

Didn't like Nothing to complain about. It's usually more expensive per gallon than the larger buckets, but it's still a quality product.

Good base salt, small package

General A solid base salt for most tanks with a long standing good reputation. It is more of a refill for the buckets than a container by itself. This is a small package but useful for nano or pico keepers

Liked about it Good solid levels and competitively priced.

Didn't like Requires supplementation for high growth SPS or clam tanks. If you plan on leaving this in the bag be prepared for clumps.

I'm switching to the box

General I will continue to purchase this, I have accumulated a lot of buckets now and I will try to save some money by switching to the box.

Liked about it A fast dissolving salt, no casulties of any kind since I have been using it.

Didn't like After I switched to this from a different brand I had 1 outbreak of cyanobacteria, can't say that this switched caused it, but I just wanted to mention it.
