not the best salt in my experience featured

Comments I havent used oceanic salt for a few years, but when I did I found it to be a decent quality salt for fish only tanks. It did have rather high calcium (upwards of 500ppm) content at the expense of alkalinity, so I commonly had to supplement the tank for alkalinity. If found cheap, I would understand why someone would use this salt, but if costs are the same I still prefer the instant ocean line (either the regular IO or reef crystals).

Liked about it This salt dissolved quickly and was easy to find, which can be a bit of a challenge for some of the more exotic brands (tropic marin, for example). It's relatively inexpensive in my experience, though sometimes I had to pay more for it compared to instant ocean.

Didn't like The calcium content of this salt is good, but that generally resulted in deplete alkalinity. If you're keeping a lot of stony corals, you may want to find a salt that has a better balance of calc/alk. If you are just keeping a fish only tank and can get this salt cheap, it would be fine to use, but if you're keeping a lot of corals (particularly stonies), I'd look for something else.

OK in Calcium, lacking in Magnesium, low Alkalinity and Inconsistent from bucket to bucket

Comments I have gone through two large buckets of this product. It really doesn't mix up to anywhere near where it should be chemically for reef water. Mix up a bucket with some RO/DI water and check your levels. You will find the Calcium high, Alkalinity low and Magnesium totally unacceptable at roughly 1000 ppm. A good reef salt mix should start you off at an Mg level of 1250-1400 ppm Mg. I will be switching to Red Sea Coral Pro at increased expense because I can respect a company that stamps each bucket with the levels. Granted, I haven't yet tested the Red Sea levels. We'll see how that goes.

Liked about it 1) The 6 gallon bucket is a nice keepsake for maintenance and storage
2) The lid has a rubber gasket and re-seals easily
3) If you don't dose anything from the get-go (not recommended unless doing FOWLR system), it does mix clear initially.

Didn't like 1) Poor chemical composition
2) Grains are very fine compared to other mixes and get airborne easily
3) You need to add buffer or raise the Alkalinity and Magnesium from the get-go if you want to use it in a reef system.

Not so natural salt mix

Comments This salt may seem like a good deal when found on sale but your not getting what you think you are. I have never bought this product as i am a huge fan of instant ocean but i have been trying to help a friend balance there water and fight chronically low Ph. This problem was identified in advanced advanced aquariest, and i don't feel as though you should have to spend a lot of time effort and money trying to doctor a substandard product.

Liked about it No good experiences, the fish didn't die but thats not really a measure is it.

Didn't like Ph stabilizes in the low eight range which is acceptable for fish only aquariums, with damsels only but not near what your looking for in a reef. Calcium is low but that is ok i guess because if your trying to fix low ph might as well fix that to. I will never buy this product and would recommend others steer clear of this headache.
