Excellent for Nitrate Reduction featured

Comments Before I added this refugium to my 29 gallon DIY nano tank, I had trouble with nitrates which stayed around 20 ppm. Once I added this with Chaetomorpha algae my Nitrates first went down to ten, then five and now zero. I also was able to put in a lop sided 5 inch deep sand bed with caribsea 1.7 mm reef grade seafloor aragonite sand. I also put some fiji mudin the shelf/baffle area right before the return.

Liked about it Looks nice
runs quiet
Zero Nitrates with Chaeto
Full of Pods.

Didn't like I don't like the fact that the power compact light runs so hot it burns the top of my chaetomorpha which sticks up from the surface of the water. But besides that the unit is great. It is very heavy however and there is no way I would ever actually hang this on my tank, so I made a shelf behind my tank which also helps stablize my stand and I also made a pedestal out of three 2x4's to support it. I also have my Aquamaxx hob1 supported in a similar manner. I have no sump since I do not have a reef ready tank. I may get a sump soon. I initially bought this because I wanted a mandarin but I may not get one since There still seems to not be enough pods in my display as my clown constantly eats them all day. On the bright side I have a very happy juvenile clownfish.

Very useful, better than the one with the skimmer featured

Comments There's a similar hang-on refugium that comes with a built in skimmer; in my opinion, skip that one and buy this one instead. The skimmer just isn't that great, you'll be happier with the extra room and a separate skimmer that you choose.

This version, without the skimmer, is a great buy for those of us who have at least one of our tanks without a refugium. This is a sturdy product, well built enough to put some live sand, or smaller pieces of live rock. For me, I would skip the rock and just use sand and macro-algae, especially cheato which works perfectly for this.

The included pump keeps the water in the refugium circulating which reduces the build up of detritus and allows for a good exchange of gases from the small space. If you want to grow amphipods, this is a perfect little home for them and they will thrive. It also acts as a good place to put frags, or injured fish that need a little time alone.

You will need to spend an extra $50 or so to buy a light as most of the ones I've seen for sale don't come with it. If you look around though you may indeed find one with it included.

I do think the price is a little high, I would rather pay $80 for this, but, since it is a piece of equipment you will have forever it doesn't hurt so much to spend that.

As an added bonus the intake and outtake will add a little bit of flow to your display tank and every so often the amphipods will be spit out into the main tank to be consumed or add genetic diversity to the population in the main display.

Liked about it 1. Comes in various sizes for whatever tank you have
2. Very sturdy and will last
3. Good pump and is designed for it to be easily replaceable

Didn't like 1. Generally need to find a light separate
2. Has the potential to overflow if the outtake gets clogged. There are in tank refugium available that negate this risk.
3. Costs a bit more than I think it's worth

first refugium... no regrets!!

Comments ive gone through my acuarist hobby for 3 years now and i barely felt the need for a sump/refugium. lately though i was convinced by one of my friends to buy this same refugium for one of my tanks. this product has made my life a lot easier and has made this hobby a lot more interesting than it already was... to those of you out there i would recommend this product, since it will probably make you work a lot easier

Liked about it -size
-return pump
-hang on avility

Didn't like -needs to be kept on constant watch since its a hang on refugium

Nice little fuge

Comments Having a little fuge like this on a smaller tank has a lot of benifits. It can take nitrates out of the aqurium by having a live sand bed and some chaeto algea. The little pump keeps water moving and keeps the water supply at the perfect level. Great value for the money. You can also raise pods in this and they are needed for keeping picky eaters.

Liked about it Natural way to keep nitrates down, good for raising pods.

Didn't like needs a seperate light, should be less expensive.
