Great sump! Very glad I purchased it. featured

Comments When I decided to add a sump to my tank I looked all over and did tons of research. I watched videos, read reviews, talked to locals, and even looked into getting a custom sump made. At my LFS this sump had just arrived and the price was right. I went home and did some more research on this particular sump (I have the model 3) and based on what I learned I decided to get it.

Set up was very easy, really not much to it and I had the thing up and running in a very short time. I use it as a refugium sump, but of course it can be used pretty much however you want to. There's plenty of room for live rock and cheato and the cover has clear acrylic over it so a light can sit right on top and shine down. It looks sleek.

There's plenty of room in my model for a nice skimmer and if I wanted to add couple of reactors there's room for that too.

It comes with two filter socks. I removed these after a short period of time because a general rule I am too lazy to maintain filter socks. Bleaching and replacing! Forget it. However, they certainly did trap detritus.

There are two things about the sump that I don't care for. The first is that the first chamber is a little hard to get into the bottom of. Not a lot, but some. I use a wet/dry vac to suck out detritus so with that I can easily get in, but if one was just using a siphon it might be harder. The second things is that there is a wall that moves up and down. The position determines which type of sump you are going to have. The wall does not click into place if you turn off your pump it slides down. It's only when the pump is on that the water pressure holds it in place. I used an acrylic rod to keep mine up and now I never have to worry about it.

Honestly those to items are so minor that they do not bother me and certainly would not keep me from buying this sump again.

Liked about it 1. Affordable.
2. Flexible (in terms of use).
3. Easy to set up.
4. Plenty of room for skimmer, and reactors.
5. Clear area on top for light to sit on when using as a refugium.

Didn't like 1. Front area a little hard to get to. This is not a big deal since you seldom need to.
2. Sliding wall needs to be secured. Easily done so not a major issue.

Proflex Modular Sump, Great idea, average execution.. featured

Comments This sump easily sets up as a Berlin, Wet/Dry, or Live Sump. It can also used hybrid combination. The sump area has plenty of room for a return pump, a large protein skimmer, etc. It has a pretty reasonable pricetag, however it seems the acrylic thickness was sacrificied in order to cut the cost. I would say it is a good middle of the road in terms of quality, and a good idea.

Liked about it I liked the general concept to this sump. The chambers offer plenty of space to house the media of my choice. all areas are easy to access and the filter socks are easily changed out when the sump is in use. I like the fact that it has a narrow footprint so that it fits under a 12x48 cabinet. Another great feature is that the sump's top has grooves that seem to be made for Coralife's T5 HO Mini Refugium light.

Didn't like I didn't like that the acylic thickness is a little on the thin side. Another flaw I've noticed is that detritus will accumulate on the inlet chamber floor and not make it into the socks, so it's advisable to install a small powerhead to sweep the detritus free and prevent collection. The wall that seperates the inlet chamber and the center is held up by the flow through the sump which makes sense, however it should have a locking mechanisim so that you can prevent leaching when in refugium mode. The filter socks fill up very quickly, so you will need several pair to clean and rotate with. When the socks are filled, the water comes over a secondary false wall in order to prevent overflow. Which I think was a fantastic idea
