a nice butterfly, but certainly not for the "reef safe" category

There are a number of lookalike species that can take the name of pearlscale butterfy, so make certain you know what fish you're buying. The chaetodon xanthurus is a very attractive butterfly that dines readily on coral polyps, and they can be a bit of a struggle to get acclimated to captivity. They should be fed a wide variety of foods, including something which contains sponge. They are relatively small, staying under about 6 inches as an adult.

This butterfly is relatively inexpensive and stays pretty small. They're good fish for a fish-only system and, once acclimated, they should do well. They're probably not going to tolerate other butterfly fish (unless it's a mate), but they'll be pretty tolerant of other non-like fish.

Two thoughts for the complaint department; first, it does take a bit of effort to get them acclimated to prepared foods, and they need a good variety (mussels and sponges are a good choice). And second, for a reef, these are a terrible choice. They will almost certainly take to nipping or eaten clams and corals.
