Helfrich's Firefish Goby

Helfrichi Firefish, aka Helfrich's Dartfish, is a rare offering in the trade. They are pale pink in color with a yellow head adorned with a dark purple blaze. Firefish need plenty of rockwork to hide in and feel comfortable...

Scientific Name Nemateleotris helfrichi

Common Names Helfrichi's Firefish, Helfrich's Dartfish, Helfrich's Firefish

Colorful+fish=expensive

Comments These firefish have wonderful coloration but are a little too expensive for my taste. Other than the color these fish are pretty hardy and easy to keep. They are jumpers just like their other firefish cousins, so it is best to keep a cover on your tank. They are great for nano tanks because of their small size. They are very peaceful towards tank mates and are reef safe. They are fun to watch as their little dorsal fin flicks up and down as the cruise along.

Liked about it Color, size, hardyness

Didn't like Price you will really shell out the $$$$ for this fish.

great colors, but very expensive

Comments Firefish are great additions to tanks with peaceful inhabitants, and they do well in reef tanks. The Helfrichi firefish is rather expensive, but the unique coloration is certain to grab the addition to any visitors you have. They don't require a lot of space, I've kept firefish in tanks as small as 10 gallons, and they may shoal if kept in numbers in larger systems. They do well in aquaria, and I've found them to be easy to acclimate to captivity.

Liked about it The one standout of this fish is the color. Though it comes at a price, this fish is very uniquely colored and brings a dynamic to any tank. These fish stay small, they don't add much bioload to the tank, and they do well in peaceful systems. They will co-habitate with their own species and with most peaceful reef fish.

Didn't like The biggest drawback of this fish is the price. Usually at well over $100 each, these can be hard to justify. They arent that much more dynamic in coloration compared to the purple firefish, but they are rare and many folks want them for that reason. Collected from the marshall islands, they're much less frequently available. Also, due to their skittish behavior, they will frequent dart around the tank to avoid other fish (which are often perceived as predators). Becuase of this nature, they're very likely to jump out of the tank. To insure your investment a little, I'd highly recommend keeping this fish in a well covered aquarium.
