Not my favorite goby
| Comments |
I love goby, they are among my favorite fish to keep. I've even kept the brackish bumble bee goby. The Sleeper goby is not one of my favorites. While it does have nice coloration on the head, the rest of the body is rather bland. I also find the torpedo shape of the body to be less-goby-like than other species, taking away one of the things I like most about the group.
Many Sleepers will take prepared foods, but an aquarist has to be careful, because many will not. This is a sand-sifting goby so it gets its balanced diet from foraging. For this reason a larger tank is required. I would recommend at least a 48" long tank (usually a 55 gallon) with plenty of live sand for it to sift through. It will also be more healthy if you have a mature tank (at least a year old) or an established tank (six months old) with an attached refugium. This will insure there is plenty of infauna to feast on. When they do eat prepared foods, include some worms, shrimp, and carnivore formula for them. The color they do have will be enhanced when they have a balanced diet. They should be fed often.
The Sleeper will burrow. As will all burrowing species it's important to make sure your rock work is resting on the glass bottom of your tank. If not, this fish will did underneath it, causing it to settle and creating a minor earthquake in your tank. This can cause rocks to tumble and shift which can damage corals and even the fish itself could be crushed. The sand sifting never stops (that's how it eats) and will certainly not allow you to do any meaningful aquascaping that involves the sand bed.
If you can get a mated pair the two will live well together, and the Sleeper will get a long with the other fish in your tank, but will be aggressive toward conspecifics.
Like many goby, the Sleeper is a jumper. If spooked it will either dart into a cave but if not close to its cave it will go right out of the tank. For this reason it's best not to keep it with aggressive or semi-aggressive fish.

1. Fun to watch sand sifting.
2. Peaceful fish.

1. Jumper.
2. Not as attractive as other goby (personal opinion I know).
3. Requires larger tank and plenty of sand for a proper, balanced diet.

Awesome Sand Sifter
| Comments |
Often called the Yellow Head Sleeper Goby. Its head is yellow-gold with a sapphire-blue stripe below the eyes, and the rest of the body is off-white. I bought a pair of these guys about a year ago. They really keep the sand clean. Thats all they do is scoop up sand and sift through it looking for food. Sometimes it can be hard to teach them to eat prepared foods. They will find a cave or dig there own hole for their home. If frightened they will bolt there quickly.

Liked how they would keep the sand turned and clean. Also really like the colors. They are very peaceful fish always swimming out in the open.

They sift so much that I had to trade them in. I have alot of current and they had the whole tank covered with sand. Everything! Don't get me wrong these guys do a great job and are a great saltwater tank addition. They just weren't a good fit for me.

They are really easy going and get along great with my other fish in the tank. The sleeper and my sailfin hang around all day long in the tank.

Great Fish
| General |
I bought a pair a few years back. One smaller one larger I saw then hanging out together in the tank at the lfs. I had a deep sand bed at the time and needed something to keep it clean. These fish are incredible at cleaning the sand. They never stop cleaning. They mind their own business and never start trouble. I would highly recommend these fish for anyone with a large enough tank and has a fine sand bed. I wouldn't recommend these fish for someone with a rubble sand bed. |
