My new favorite tang featured

Comments I've had several tangs over the years and this is by far my favorite. It eats readily and grazes the day through. Like all tangs it needs to be carefully acclimated in such a way that minimizes stress to the fish. One of the things that makes the Kole a desirable tang is that it does not require the massive tank sizes that other tangs do. If you have a 48" long tang (your standard 55 gallon) the fish will be just fine. This is because they are grazers and their swimming is not for speed or exercise but rather to just get around the tank to find the next big of algae to suck up.

When I first got mine it would only eat seaweed on the clip but after about a week and a half it started eating the Formula II everyone else in the tang was eating. It supplements its own diet by grazing so nutrition isn't really an issue with this fish.

One thing you should be aware of is that they do change color as they mature. They are brown when juveniles and become blue as adults. With some fish the juvenile colors are great and the adult colors are terrible, the Kole is NOT one of those fish, both the juvenile and the adult colors are awesome.

As for temperament, my kole gets along with all of the fish in my tang but one. For some odd reason it doesn't like the orchid dottyback. The only reason I can think of is that they want to live in the same cave. The tang doesn't hurt the dottyback at all, it just chases him until he goes into the rocks. However, with my gobys, the clowns, chromis, etc etc it gets along just fine and is quite a passive fish. At feeding time it lets everyone get their share except the dottyback who has to sneak its food.

If you want a tang and don't want everyone to yell at you for having one in a small tank then this is the one to get. It has all the appealing features of a tang without the haste of needing 6-8' of swimming room 4' is fine.

This is a very active fish. It will always be out swimming around. It is a shy fish though and will take several weeks to get used to you and it runs and hides when there is fast movement outside the tank. Maybe not the right fish for a room used by little kids or with heavy foot traffic.

Liked about it 1. Small sized tang does well in 4' tang
2. Nice coloration for both juvenile and adult
3. Grazes on algae like other tangs which really helps the tank out.
4. Readily eats prepared foods. Does well health-wise on Formula II
5. LOTS of personality! This fish will become a pet.

Didn't like 1. Chases my dottyback

Great Fish to Keep in a variety of systems.

Comments As long as you obey a couple simple rules this Fish is bound to thrive in your system
Requires a very Nutritious diet, and I had mine on a mix of Algae and even would Gouge on Mysis Shrimp.
They love plenty of hiding spaces and lots of swimming room.
Mine was very entertaining and had a habit of pushing water at my hand when ever in the tank doing maintenance.
It had a thing of hanging close with my Cardinal and NEVER became aggressive toward any of my other Fish.

Liked about it Love the mix of colors.
Very good eaters one they adjust to there new Home.
Very mellow and even temperament.
Great personality as with most tangs.

Didn't like Took a little bit of time to get eating in my system.
Was very cautious and finicky for the first 2-3 months, and at one point I said "Great I got a fish Ill never see".

Great for curbing filamentus hair algae

Comments I picked up one of these beautiufl fish to help curb my hair algae problem. He did just that! The Yellow Eyed Kole tang spends most of the day grazing off tank walls and live rock. They love to much on filamentus hair alage and green diatom algae. However, if the hair algae is too long the kole cannot eat it and will pass it by.

Aside from the cleanup crew properties, this fish has a FANTASTIC personality. When first introduced they are usually quite shy and have great vision so if they see you coming, they will go hide. Eventually they will get used to your presence in front of the tank and will come out to greet you and show off its awesome color combination. They usually dont get too big so koles can be kept in a 48" tank as juviniles. However, like all tangs, a full grown one should be in a 60" or longer tank as they like to swim swim swim.

Liked about it Awesome personality
Eats the dreaded hair algae
Very peaceful and gets along with most non-agressive fish

Didn't like Like all sugeronfish, they are suseptable to ich and other external diseases

Great tang for tanks over 75 gallons

Comments I like bristletooth tangs for folks with smaller tanks, such as around 75 or larger. I wouldnt recommend this fish for anything smaller than that. The yellow eye kole tang is a relatively peaceful fish that does well in a reef tank. While they may help with some nuisance algae, I wouldnt buy one with that in mind; they're more likely to ignore it than eat it.

Liked about it A peaceful surgeonfish that stays under 7" most of the time, these fish are active and beautiful, and generally inexpensive compared to other tangs.

Didn't like May be too big for most, and often suffer damage to the mouth during shipping. If you have the opportunity, check at the store that it's eating and looks healthy before purchase.
