Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum)
|
A Zebrasoma species collected from the Red Sea, the purple tang can reach ~10" in captivity. A somewhat aggressive surgeonfish, it's recommended that they be kept as the only Zebrasoma in a tank. Needs a minimum of around 120 gallons, but even more space if there are other tangs being kept with it.

A real stunner!
| Comments |
Of all the surgeonfish this one is in my top three along with the Naso and Sailfin! Absolutely stunning deep rich purple with a bright yellow tail. This fish is not only beautiful it's functional. It will spend it's day picking algae off your rocks for you! This fish is extremely easy to keep. They are not picky about food and get along great with everyone. They are not cheap. They are hard to find under $100 making them not so easy to get. You better make sure you have a well established stable tank before dropping the cash on one of these guys!

The COLOR! WOW it's breathtaking.
Compatibility This fish can be kept with most other fish without any issues and it's very docile.
It's a grazer. I love grazers. Less work for me :)

Beautiful fish, but typically aggressive as they mature
| Comments |
This fish has very dynamic colors, I can't think of another fish as brilliantly purple as this. However, these fish are notoriously aggressive as they age, and I wouldnt expect it to tolerate even other tangs in a tank under 120-150 gallons. There are certainly exceptions, but if you're conservative in your approach take that under consideration. You'd be wise to add this last among your surgeonfish if you plan on housing others.

Wonderful colors, may help with algae issues (though not expected).

Aggressive, rather expensive compared to other more common Zebrasomas (yellow, scopas).
