Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)
|
A relatively peaceful acanthurus species (though not entirely peaceful), the powder brown tang grows to about 8". Collected from the indian ocean, these are good addition to tanks over about 100 gallons.

Easy going Tang
| Comments |
I have 2 in a 125 gallon tank. They are always swimming all over the tank and you will need a large tank for them. I have seen them chasing each other from time to time. They seem to be a hardy fish as far as tangs go and will eat about anything that I put into the tank. Have not bothered any corals at this point. I have several other types of fish in the tank and they get along with all of them.

Great eaters. Will eat most anything and love algea sheets. Get along with other fish very well. They love to keep moving and bring some life to your tank.

Not much to not like although I will say that they are a pretty fish but not exactly "flashy" like some other fish.

A cheaper less colorful powder brown.
| Comments |
For all intent and purposes the powder brown and powder blue are identical with exception to color! This one has different coloration but is just as beautiful as it's cousin. It's a great addition to any tank over 120 gallons. They are extremely docile, they play well with others. Very active which is always nice I hate to see fish just sitting there. They are easy to keep. Not picky about food and are always grazing!

It's one of the cheaper colorful tangs, yet still beautiful
Compatibility This fish can be kept with most other fish without any issues and it's very docile.
It's a grazer. I love grazers. Less work for me :)

Not much not to love about these but in my opinion for the extra $20 or so go for the powder blue.

A good fish choice for large tanks
| Comments |
The Powder Brown tang is a good choice for tanks over about 100 gallons, and is a much better choice than the whitecheek tang (Acanthurus nigricans). The Powder Brown is relatively peaceful towards most any tankmates, though I've found that it may react negatively towards other surgeonfish in the same tank. I wouldnt say these fish are likely to consume nuisance algae, though there may be an exception to this rule.

Nice coloration and easier to acclimate to the tank than other Acanthurus fish, this is a nice fish to keep. Nothing outstanding, but a good choice if you're newer to the hobby or trying to choose between this and the whitecheek.

I havent had many negative experiences with this fish. In general a good choice, but nothing outstanding to me; in other words, somewhat common and not very striking.
