Flame Hawkfish (Neocirrhitus armatus)

Up to about 4", the flame hawk doesnt require a lot of space. Named for their tendency to perch and watch prey swim by, these fish are very personable and good additions to most aquariums. Tanks larger than about 30 gallons should be fine for these fish.

Very Neat Fish!

Comments The Flame Hawkfish is very easy to care for. This fish is not agressive towards other fish in my tank. Although I did have to remove a red lipped blenney, as they both seemed to want the rocks all to themselves and were constanly chasing each other. After the removal of the blenney every one seemed to be happy. I wouldnt say it grows fast, I have had this fish for about a month and I can see that it is somewhat larger. I enjoy watching this guy hop around on the rocks and he adds a pop of red wherever he goes. Mine really like pellets, also will go after other types of food. very easy to feed and keep.

Liked about it This fish is hardy, fun to watch, and even when my tank broke out with ick, my flame hawkfish pushed through. i never noticed one spot on him!

Didn't like He went after a cleaner shrimp, when the shrimp was first introduced. This may be due to the smrimp falling ( almost like food) but left it alone after that.

great personality!

Comments I've had Bud in my tank for about 3 months. He's like a puppy! When I get up in the morning he swims to the front of the tank to greet me. I've even been able to hand feed him flakes! He'll eat pretty much anything I put in the tank, even the baby wrasse I tried putting in. Brine shrimp are his favorite. He gets along great with everyone, even my small damsels. He leaves my peppermint shrimps alone. I had a hermit crab die so I pulled it out of its shell and Bud loved it! I definitely recommend this fish to anyone. Beginner like me to the most advanced.

Liked about it Great personality. Adapts to any food. Nice color.

Didn't like Only problem was he killed my six line wrasse. I think because it was so small he thought it was food. I have a bigger six line with him now and they get along great!

Awesome fish, though sometimes not the best choice

Comments These fish show a great personality, often interacting directly with the owner. I've had one of these fish for a long time, and the vibrant color and unusual perching tendency bring a new dynamic to the tank. It is always a crowd pleaser. The are two things I'd recommend considering when looking at adding one of these fish to your tank; other tank inhabitants, and possible prey. First, these fish arent going to be tolerated by similar fish, or other small predatory fish (in particular I'm considering the springers dottyback that would chase the flame hawk all over the tank). And second, if you have smaller shrimp, they MAY be eaten, however I've never personally experienced that (having had a flame with all kinds of shrimp, including smaller harlequins).

Liked about it Absolutely wonderful personality, great colors, and a unique tendency to perch. I've really liked having this fish over the years and expect to always have one in my tank.

Didn't like Though not an issue with the flame hawk, I didnt like how it was treated by the dottyback in my system. I ended up getting rid of the dottyback, though, and it's been no issues since then.

This is one cool fish

Comments These fish are always so neat to watch. The hop from rock to rock perching on outcrops to observe their tank mates and every body walking around outside of the tank. They eat mainly meaty foods like brine and mysis shrimp. They will also eat marine pellets and flakes. They prefer no other tank mates that are similarly shaped as they may get agressive towards similarly shaped fish. There color is very cool too its like red plaid and checkers.

Liked about it Color, personality, hardy

Didn't like none
