A good fish for beginners but can be rather aggressive in the wrong tank featured

Comments This is probably my favorite of the common damselfish. It stands out because of it's bold and broad bands. Don't be surprised as your fish gets older if these bands fade, even to the point where you end up with a mostly black fish.

It is not as aggressive as some others of its kind, but is still an aggressive fish. This can be managed by making sure it has a cave to hide in and that it is the smallest fish in the tank.

I have known people to keep them in a 10 gallon tank by themselves. Personally I feel this is too small and can only recommend a 30 gallon for it. This fish likes to swim all over the tank, and the standard dimensions of a 10 gallon tank simply aren't enough. If it is the only fish in the tank, you might get away with it while it is still small, but this small area would cause added aggression.

When they are little they have been known to host with anemone, but the adults don't seem to do this. I've also heard of mature fish finding a coral they like and sticking with it. Depending on the coral this can be no problem or can damage it. I've also had them not host with anything and just hang around caves. Either way, they do this to feel secure and it's a good idea to make sure they feel that way to avoid stress and aggression toward tankmates.

They eat meaty foods supplemented with algae so for a balanced diet mix it up a bit between fresh or frozen and flake with algae in it. They are not picky eaters and I've never had one not eat even shortly after being introduced into a tank.

I consider them reef safe and have never had an issue of them nipping corals and when they host with a coral it they do not seem to buffet it very much.

Liked about it 1. Nice body shape and coloration, especially in juveniles.
2. Very hardy species.
3. Not a picky eater.

Didn't like 1. Aggressive.
2. Colors can fade.

Immortal fish... featured

Comments I bought one of these fish after the tank had cycled and he is still around and doing well. Has not seemed to grow that much. I know that damsels are aggressive but this guy has not bothered anyone. He is a little smaller than most of my fish but a couple fish I have are smaller than him and he has never bothered them. He seems to eat anything that I put in the tank for food. This is a fish that you will never have to worry about as far as care is concerned. It is a great beginner fish but you need to consider if you will still want him around down the road as your tank matures.

Liked about it A maintenance free fish. The only thing that I put in my tank that he will not eat is algea for the Tangs. Any meaty food he is right after it. He adds some color to the tank although not super appealing. VERY hardy fish. It has never shown any problems with the ups and downs of a tank. Always seems to be doing well.

Didn't like I have heard that they are aggressive as are most damsels but this one does not seem to be, but something to consider. At this point with my reef tank I would not be bothered if I did not have him, but catching him is a entire different story.

The three stripe devil!

Comments The three strip and four stripe are not as colorful as other damselfish but are just as aggressive!
They are very easy to keep and extremely hardy. sadly for this reason and the fact that they are very inexpensive many people use them to live cycle their tanks. That is just cruel to the fish. Aside from the aggression these are great little fish perfect for any tank from a Nano to a very large system. Be warned that due to their aggressive nature many people decide they they want to get rid of them after a few months which is near impossible without removing all the live rock in the tank. They are small and prefer hiding in the rock work.

Liked about it Price, They are extremely cheap and affordable.
Care, they are easy to keep and nearly bullet proof.
Color, all of the damsel fish are extremely bright and colorful but the 3 and 4 stripes are not nearly;y as colorful as many others.

Didn't like Aggression, they fish are very aggressive and are always picking fights even with fish much bigger than them.
They are also near impossible to remove from your tank if you so choose.

Good starter fish

Comments Was placed in my tank by a friend who lost $180 of fish to it, thinking that going from a 30g to 120g it would be fine. It was fine for two days before taking over the whole tank, by whole tank I mean one other fish, two emerald crabs, two shrimp. Went out of its way every 10 sec to snap at something. Now he has his own home in my 25g refugium with sand and rock.

Liked about it Wont die. Great for beginners cycling a new tank. Also great for refugium pet.

Didn't like Killed friends fish by nipping away at or chasing fish out of tank. Didnt play well with others in my tank.

There very cute and very aggressive territorial f

Comments This fish is like a clone to the 3 spot Damsel fish. When its younger its Aggressive but will shy away from bigger fish. Once he starts to grow within a year he becomes very aggressive and territorial. Will knock over corals and even hurt fish that come close to his side of the tank. I did have two but both fought for the same territory and one died. These fish my be cute but they have some anger issue problem's :-) I would say for a adult fish no tank smaller then a 70 gal if you want to keep him with other bigger fish. Never add fish that's smaller then him.

Liked about it Eats very well. Easy to care for.

Didn't like To Aggressive and territorial. This fish has even nip at my hand when I was cleaning the glass in the tank.
