Works fine, just noisy as heck

I had no problems setting up the skimmer on my new 25gal cube, I wouldn't recommend it for anything larger than this unless you aren't going to have any coral. Once set up it didn't want to start the water flow very easily. I had to stop/start the pump multiple times before it would siphon and skim. After that, it worked as expected. Unlike some other reviewers, I have not had to constantly adjust the flow. Once set, it works.

| Performance vs. Expectations |
Once operating for about 2 days, it started skimming well. It can put out a full volume of skimmate in about a week. My only on going issue was that it is very noisy. The left hand chamber is where the pump is located but it does not contain water, so it echos the vibrations of the pump a lot. I put cotton in the top half of this chamber to muffle the echo and it did quite it down, but I still wouldn't want it in my bedroom or living room.

I think that for the money (less than $90) it is worth it. If you want perfection, you can and will spend a lot more.

Red Sea Prizm Skimmer review
| General |
This was my introduction in the world of Protein Skimmers. I used this unit because I did not have a sump (used a canister) and it had a very slim profile. I found myself always adjusting the unit and it took sometime to break-in (at least a couple of weeks). Once the unit broke in it seemed to work nicely but it would overflow without warning and it reacted very poorly to minimal water level changes. I found myself turning the flow rate down when I was not home to avoid a puddle of gunk on my floor. I finally had to get a sump and sell this unit for an in-sump model because I was too worried about the skimmer resevoir over-filling. Over-all I would only recommend this unit as a last resort item do to space. It works but it requires a lot of adjustments and visual monitoring. |

When its working it is OK, but is hard to adjust. When you feed the tank it overflows even if you have it shutoff for two hours after feeding.

Good value for the money
| Installation and Operation |
Installation was really easy as it is either a HOB or and In sump model, I have mine hanging on the wall of my sump.

Does an excellent job on my 125 (200+ gallons of water), biggest thing is keeping it cleaned...h

Not bad
| General |
I would not put this on a three hundred gallon tank. Perhap 200 gallon total water volume. As said in other reviews It can be hard to adjust. Once it is dialed in though it does a fine job. You can get a much better skimmer for just a little more money though. |

A pain in the rear
| General |
These skimmers are not easy to set up at all. Luckily mine was used in sump first or I would have flooded the floor a couple of times. Once you do get them set they are ok, but I believe they are overrated. Do not waste your money or time trying to set one up, just spend a few more bucks and go with the C-Skim 1200...the Cadillac of skimmers. |
