AquaMaxx HOB 1 Hang On Back Protein Skimmer

The AquaMaxx Hang on Back Series I (HOB-1) protein skimmer features an incredibly responsive collection cup and an amazingly powerful Sicce Syncra 1.5 submersible pump. It is rated up to 75 gallons, and compact and light enough to be placed on nano or other small saltwater fish tanks.

Great unit for an HOB skimmer. featured

Installation and Operation The instructions leave quite a bit to be desired. The unit is fairly easy to figure out. The YouTube video is a great help.

Performance vs. Expectations This skimmer, was my first and only skimmer I have ever used, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I really like it however, it does a great job, getting all of the gunk out of my aquarium. It starts off foaming out a lot of water at first but the longer you run it, especially in newer systems, it will settle down.

Value for money I feel it is a good value, I could have spent more money, but I don't think I would have gotten any better performance. It just does a good job and keeps on working like a champ.

Customer Support Yes I have. It is best to email them and you will get a quick response. They were helpful, especially on start up questions, when I didn't really know that much about operation and what I should expect.

Liked about it 1.Nice looking unit, beautiful blue transparent plastic. 2.Skims really well, gets the gunk out. 3. Easy to disassemble and clean, after 1 1/2 years, it still looks new.

Didn't like Power cord is too short. Written instructions are vague, their YouTube instruction are a little better.

Works like a charm!! featured

Installation and Operation The instructions are kinda hard to read but after about 20-30 minutes of starring at the diagram and trying to put this thing together I was able to figure it out. Only problem is that when I was done I have an extra rubber ring that I have no idea where it goes and I don't see anything about it anywhere in the instructions. As mentioned by another reviewer the power cord is really short so you may need an extension cord.

Performance vs. Expectations I feel it works great. The water is crystal clear and I stopped using my hang on filter that came with the aquarium setup. This skimmer combined with live rock seems to be working out just fine for my little 20 gallon tank.

Value for money This is my first experience with skimmers but the product feels and looks like it was built with quality materials. The price is a little high but I'm happy to pay a little more for quality products.

Customer Support N/A

Liked about it 1. You can adjust the collection cup to any level and make very small changes if need be.
2. Has been performing wonderfully keeping my water clean and crystal clear.
3. Strong, Quality craftsmanship.

Didn't like 1. The attaching arms could be longer so that they would reach past the rim on my aquarium (they barely don't make it).
2. A more compact design for smaller aquariums would be nice.
3. The Power cord is short.
4. Needs better instructions.

For the price - Probably One of the Best HOB Skimmers featured

Installation and Operation The installation/assembly manual was visual "connect-the-line" type diagram with limited printed words. After careful review of the diagram, assembly was a snap.

I will warn though, the power cord is a little short to my liking, I ended up needing an extension cord (against my best judgement) to power the HOB when hung from my 28 gallon Bow front on a 29.5" tall stand...

Performance vs. Expectations Vastly out preforms the previous venturi/pump HOB I previously had. The needle-wheel really get the water in the plenum active with tons of bubbles to discharge the organic waste into the collection cup. Works as well if not better than I expected.

Value for money Got it on sale during the 2011 Christmas season from Marinedepot.com for $180 plus free shipping. Nice break from the $199 price tag it currently carries.

Customer Support Haven't had to deal with them yet, but from what I have heard from others, it is quite hard to get in contact with the manufacture. Basically leave a voicemail and they will call you back.

If you have an issue with the skimmer I would try the vendor/reseller you purchased it from first.

Liked about it Top 3:

Super silent when compared to my old HOB.

Collecting good skimmate from day one.

Collection cup drain fitting can be positioned to discharge back into the skimmer or attached to a separate drain line.

Didn't like Top 3:

Short power cord required the need for an extension cord.

The new "T" fitting (which comes with new models) introduces air into the water which adds some surface bubbles to the tank but nothing too horrible.

The mounting brackets didn't fit the lip of my tank with my glass top installed. No big deal, the skimmer is mounted securely, just not the way it is depicted in the instructions.

Very nice hang-on needle-wheel protein skimmer.

Installation and Operation I found the Aquamaxx Hang-On very easy to install. The included instructions are detailed. It's extremely simple to operate. Regarding maintenance, I clean out the inside chambers once a week, and empty the collection cup daily.

Performance vs. Expectations Yes

Value for money I thought initially it was a little over priced, but in comparison to other hang on skimmers that I've used it's definitely worth it.

Customer Support I spoke directly with the dealer who sold it to me. That url is the following https://www.ocreef.com/support.php

Liked about it 1. I like the blue tinted acrylic, because it's tinted it doesn't allow algae to grow inside the unit as fast. 2. It is extremely quiet. 3. It does a great job of producing skim.

Didn't like 1. Overpriced a little 2. Could use a larger collection cup with overflow drain port 3. Could have port for CO2 Injection.
