Get the true unions...
| Comments |
While these are great to have and in many cases a ball valve is a ush I suggest you spring for the double unions.
These are easy to install and I do prefer the threaded fittings in case I want to reuse them later. Best suited before and after pumps and right at the bulkhead on the tank you will also want to have unions installed before and after to be able to remove and service pumps. That is why I suggest you just get the double unions. The price will be about the same after you buy 2 unions of reach ball valve. These quickly become near impossible to open and close. I'm not sure why maybe the saltwater but I have had many occasions where I could not get them closed.

These are cheap and readily available and just abort any hardware store.
I like threaded fitting just in-case I want to revise them for another application

If you get this valve you will most likely need to get the unions so just get the double union ball valve now and save the hassle. In tine, actually rather quickly this valve will be worthless because you will no longer be able to close it.

nice to have for on/off plumbing scenarios
| Comments |
These ball valves are good alternative to more expensive valves when you want on/off flow control. I do not recommend these valves for anything that requires discreet flow control (such as when dialing in pump flow for a return or skimmer input or output). However, if you're using them in line for something that you do maintenance on and you want to stop flow, they're a great choice.

These are cheap, easy to find, and easy to install. You can find them readily at any hardware store. This particular design makes it easy to install, as the threads are standard sizing and should work with almost any plumbing job. They're not very heavy and do a good job of stopping all flow through the system.

A couple complaints about this unit. First, while it is threaded, you really are likely to take your entire plumbing apart if you want to replace them or reuse them in another application. They're not quite permanent, but not like union ball valves. And second, the handle control is a bit of a challenge to use sometimes. I've had these where they're really hard to manipulate. But for the price, there still a good option.
