Great Build Quality and Reliability featured

Comments I have been using this product for almost 3 years. It has worked flawlessly since day 1. It has 8 channels and 6 of them are solid state and are completely silent. They also offer soft start on the solid state outlets to help pumps start quickly. The other 2 outlets are mechanical relay outlets. They are not as heavy duty as the relays in DC4HD, but are good for switching low current loads oddly enough. I did pop a fuse on it once, but that was due to a faulty heater, no fault of the DC8. I ordered 5 of them to have on hand just in case.

Liked about it 8 channels! It directly connects to the AquaController and thus does not experience the interference problems inherent with X10 triggering. Reliable! I have never sent a trigger signal to it and had it not respond.

Didn't like The one thing I don't like about this is that the 2 mechanical relay plugs can be misleading. You would think being relays, that they would handle the heavy current loads. While that is true in some regard, it is not true when using high inrush current devices such as ballasts. Particularly, Icecap Ballasts. They have a VERY high inrush current and can actually cause the contacts on the relays to fuse together. I had this happen once and had to unplug everything and hit the plug to get the relay to unstick.

Great power bar, works considerably better than standard timers featured

Comments This unit doesnt really do anything if you don't use an aquacontroller, but if you have that brand of controller this is an amazing unit. By using this unit in lieu of third party hardware, you eliminate a lot of noise issues or consistency problems often found. This unit plugs right into the base aquacontroller and fires automatically. I've never had an issue with this power bar. It adds 8 plugs to an aquacontroller and will suffice on pretty large amp draw ballasts.

Liked about it This unit works very well, the consistency is great. I use a lot of x10 hardware along with this DC8 to control non critical stuff, but those units never work perfectly. Either there's a delay in response with the x10 boxes and even sometimes they don't even flip. With the DC8, those issues are eliminated entirely. This has a good amp rating (15A total) and adds 8 independently controlled plugs. For most tanks, that should be enough for all your timed equipment. If you have a lot of hardware, a big system, or you're running more than one, you may want a couple of these. Good thing is that you can daisy chain them together for expansion.

Didn't like The only negative I've had with this unit is that, at one point, I blew a fuse. That in itself isnt an issue, but then finding the right fuse and accessing it was a problem. I actually had to go online to find the exact fuse needed (after a quick run to radio shack, they didnt have the right amperage in that size, as it's uncommon), so I was out of service for a number of days. Also, on the unit I've got (which is a bit older), you have to remove the case to access the fuse. And it will require a tool to get the fuse out, as it's in a pretty tight space. Honestly, that's more of a maintenance issue, though, so it doesnt really deter me from the product overall.

Neptune Systems Direct Connect 8 featured

Comments This is a mandatory part for a Neptune Controller and should have been sold with the controller (even if it raised the price substantially) I did not know this when I bought the unit and felt some what miss lead.

the unit itself is an aluminum structure with a salt creep resistant coating (mine has sat near/above the water for years and still looks brand new.) the power cord is very long and will go the distance so to speak. it is also made with a heavy jacketed protective insulation and heavy gauge wire with a ground. the outlets are durable and rigid. the unit has an 8 switch pin to tell the controller which unit it is because they can be daisy chained up to five in a row. what you would need 40 outlet for is beyond me but you have the power to. it is all fuse protected each outlet can be individually controlled and have a soft start feature to allow for easy start up on pumps and power heads. six of the outlets are solid state silent operating switched and two are mechanical relays to handle a higher load.

Liked about it Plug and Play literally. plug into wall and plug phone line into controller and tell the controller which outlet to turn on and off and when.

Didn't like that it did not come with the purchase of a controller.

It will not power my Coralvue dual 250 watt metal halide electronic ballast. (I would need the heavy duty dc4)
