Apex Jr. featured

Comments This is my first controller so I have nothing to compare it to, but this thing is amazing. I haven't even reached the tip of the iceberg with the capabilities but I am very happy I spent the cash. I bought the Apex Jr. w/o the display screen and a pm1 module for the lab grade pH probe.

Liked about it The graphing features, email and text alerts, and fine tuning are my favorite features so far.I am currently monitoring temperature and pH with the system. I have a BRS doser dosing kalk through the apex. I am dosing kalk once an hour around the clock. They beauty of the controller is that if my pH reaches a certain point, I have it programmed to stop dosing. I also have my heaters controlled. I could not stand to think that a $50 heater could crash my entire tank. I can sleep well knowing that if a heater fails the apex has my back and will shut the heater off and alert me of the issue.

I can check on my controller wherever I am through my iPhone app. I can manually turn on or off any equipment connected to the apex from my phone. This thing is a true fail safe.

Didn't like I am pretty much computer illiterate so the programming was a little tough. Luckily, Neptune has great costumer service and walked my through everything. I visited the Neptune forum with plenty of questions, and was greeted by very knowledgeable and helpful people.

Control at your fingertips or your blackberry featured

Comments The Apex controller is the latest offering from Neptune Systems. They are well known for being one of the leaders in aquarium controllers. This is the second product that I have owned by Neptune Systems. The first product that I purchased was the Aqua controller III which you can now find for a reduced price. I moved to the Apex for a couple of reasons.

1. I am a tech/gadget geek and my job is a Cisco network security engineer. So I am always looking for the latest and greatest toys/tools.
2. The capabilities of this controller is second to none. It has many options for expandability, According to the white paper it can expand up to 240 modules, hundreds of probes, and thousands of controlled outlets!
3. I really wanted a GUI interface to configure the networking side of things. The Aqua controller III network setup had to be done via the buttons on the controller. The configuration of the ACIII was tedious and a general pain. The Apex configuration is all done via the gui and is so easy it's ridiculous!

The product most certainly performs as advertised. I have mine set to send me email alerts to my mobile phone when the alarms I have programmed go off. For example, if my temps are too low or too high (a temp probe comes with the unit) I receive an email. If my PH drops too low or climbs too high (a PH probe also comes with the unit), if a loss of power is detected it can send you an alarm also. You can also hook it up to an I/O box and install a water bug to send you an alert if it detects water on the floor! The alarm options are almost endless. I have mine programmed to send me email alerts at certain times of the day just so i can keep an eye on things, yeah I am a geek ;). There is a 2nd probe port on the Apex that can be used for either a 2nd PH probe or an ORP probe for use with an ozonizer. I am using the second port for a PH probe to control my calcium reactor. The energybar8 is a fancy powerstrip that allows the controller to turn on and off all your devices and also keeps track of the amps used and graphs it out for you in the gui. The probes are also graphed in the gui and show you the data tracked in the last day or week. If you have internet access at home and you open the port needed to access (port 80 by default) it you can turn on and off equipment while you are away from home or just check on the tank in my friends are sick of me updating them on my tank status, well at least my non reefer friends are.

There are feed modes built in to allow you to turn off any device you program for that particular feed mode. This is great for feeding the tank, no longer do you need to unplug each powerhead, return, skimmer, etc. One click and it all shuts off for however long you have programmed it.

You can also program your lights and heaters to follow a built in seasonal table that mimics the sunrise, sunset, and avg temps of a reef (which area I cannot remember) According to the "experts" this increases chances of spawning by fish, corals, and clams.

I could go on and on about the Apex there are so many options it is overwhelming. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions about it.

Liked about it The Apex is backwards compatible with the aqua controller 2 and 3. You do not have to buy new probes, or dc8/dc4 outlets.
GUI GUI GUI
Great support from Neptune Systems
You can control more than one tank, just purchase an expansion module, new probes and you are good to go.

Didn't like My eb8 died within a few weeks, however Neptune has repaired it and shipped me the repaired unit back.
It is rather pricey, not outrageous but it can hurt your pocket book. I paid $500 for my base system.
Being a Cisco engineer I am used to command line control and it would be nice to telnet into the unit to take control from time to time. You can telnet to it but your control is pretty limited. This is a minor issue considering the power of the gui.

Amazing

Comments I did weeks of research comparing products that were capable of running my aquarium.. I found that Neptune had the best of everything.. I can control anything from my fans coning on when the tempeture gets above a certain temp my chiller kicking on at another temp. My lights, skimmer, pumps, power heads, calcium reactor, etc.. Comparied to the other products available out there the apex gives the best bang for the buck!!! It's directions for using the outlets is easy the Internet on the otherhand is not that easy..I love this product and am buying other parts for it like the breakout box.

Liked about it I can control this from my iPhone anywhere in the world at any time.. I can control it from my Mac book any where also. The handheld that comes with it is easy to use.

Didn't like I had to buy a gaming router in order to make it wireless(another100$), if you are not computer smart the install isn't the easiest.. The amount of amps that one energy bar Han hold..they are not individually 15amp plugs..
