Worked exactly as advertised! featured

Comments I have never used chemicals in my tank, but decided to use Chemiclean in order to rid my tank of cyanno. The product is as good as advertised. I previously used Chemi-pure Elite, so I had confidence in the product. I have a 47G LED/T5 SPS coral tank with clams, fishes and other inverts. I have over 25+ SPS corals in the tank, 2 clams, 9 fishes, shrimps and various hermit crabs. Nothing died except for the cyanno. Nothing in the tank should signs of stress. After 48 hours I carried out the required water change and then had to sit near the tank for an hour to empty the skimmer cup. After a couple of times emptying the cup, foaming went back to more or less normal levels. Its been a few weeks and my tank is cyanno free. I am a member on most of the big reef forums and researched well before using. I followed all the precautions and made sure my tank was well aerated. One thing I did was to leave my skimmer running without the skimmer cup, so effectively the skimmer acted as a huge aerator mixing the water. The skimmer simply overflowed back into the sump.

Liked about it Easy to use. Killed off cyanno after 48 hours.

Didn't like Nothing to add here.

It works for removing cyano, but at what expense? featured

Comments I do not like this product, even for it's intended use. It works well at eliminating red slime algae, but there's a good reason to question what else is killed off in the process. It claims to not use antibiotics to remove red slime (a form of bacteria), but there are certainly affects to the overall tank life when using this product.

Liked about it Admittedly, this does eliminate red slime from the aquarium. It is effective at this, but you have to be very cautious when using the product. It will require a large water change, and I wouldn't use it without being able to monitor the tank for a while after use. I've had a friend use this product before leaving town, only to come home with a lot more trouble than he hoped for. If you've exhausted all other means of removing cyano from your system, you may try this product, but if you havent increased your tank maintenance or otherwise but a little effort into cleaning your tank I'd not jump onto this solution.

Didn't like Again, chemiclean requires a lot of overhead to be effective without being overly dangerous. There are a number of risks that are taken when using this product to remove cyano, and those need to be properly mitigated. The instructions for this product do give you some tips on doing so, but it's not exhaustive regarding what is occurring chemically in the tank so that you know better how to anticipate any issues. I do not believe this is a better solution than proper tank husbandry, either. Increasing your nutrient export will be easily as effective at eliminating cyano, though it does take more time. I'd much prefer water changes over dumping chemicals in my tank.

Great Product that delivers what it advertises. featured

General Chemiclean Red Slime Remover

Use: Removes Cynaobacteria due to excess nitrates and ammonia.

Price: Anywhere between $8-$15. Online seems to offer the best prices but you have to take shipping into consideration as well. Most LFS around me average $11-$12.

Net Product: A whopping 2 grams. That 2 grams will treat up to 300 gallons.

Product Claims:
-Removes disease causing red cyno bacteria (red slime) from live corals (does not say which ones cause we all know the vast amounts of the different types available).
-Oxidizes trapped organic sludge and sediment. (Better water flow might help this out a bit)
-Clarifies aquarium water and promotes ideal enzyme balance. (I think the removal of the cyano as well as the water change make this possible so take it with a grain of salt)

Directions:
-One level scoop per 10 gallons. After 48 hours repeat if needed. (They seem pretty set on this and I would not deviate from it).
-20% water change required after 48 hours. (This is a must in my book)
-Remove carbon, turn off skimmer etc...(Might turn a few people off)
-Recommends to use once a month but I think that is a total overkill. Something is really wrong if you keep having to battle this stuff.

The Down Low:
I had a pretty good outbreak in a fairly new tank and let the guy at the LFS talk me into buying some.

The first day I really did not notice anything other then some of the cyano starting to get a little fuzz on it.

The second day the cyano was starting to lift off the rocks and some pieces had fallen off and got hung up in other places around the tank. It made it super easy to clean off the rock and you could pretty much just grab it out of the tank by hand in small clumps.

This stuff worked for me and overall I was impressed by it. Non of my corals seemed to care and my fish did not show any signs of stress either. After the 48 hour water change the levels in my aquarium were better then before the dose. I am leaning more towards the 20% water change rather then the chemiclean but can see that with a bunch of the cyano gone it could possibly make a difference.

The cyano did not all vanish into mid air but it was reduced and made the stuff that was still in the tank very easy to remove. It was well worth the price, time and effort to get the results.

Liked about it Very easy to use and it delivers. Easy to follow directions and you do not need to be a chemist to use it.

Didn't like The only issue I have with this product is the removal of media and the skimmer.

Boyds Chemi-clean 2g

Comments Cynobacteria removal. Usually do to high nitrates. Over feeding or lack of maintenance usually the cause. Follow all directions. Such as turn off skimmer as it will go crazy. Remove carbon etc. Cynobacteria is more of a bacteria than an algae. It doesn't attatch itself well. You can usually remove it with a turkey baster.I removed most of it this way then treated. Treats about 300 gallons. Once treatment is done and cyno is gone do a 20-25% water change.

Liked about it works in a matter of days. Doesn't negatively affect inhabitants at all.

Didn't like how it negatively affected skimmer. I forgot to turn it off 1st time I used it. Big mistake!!!!! Within seconds it overflowed like crazy. Then you have to clean it out real well to removal all traces of product.

chemi-clean

Comments works, but follow directions!

Liked about it For those with perpetual cyano issues, this can help. It is not a cure all for lack of flow or poor skimming, but it can help knock down the algae to get things under control. Be sure to follow the directions/dosage carefully, and to do the prescribed water changes. Your skimmer will go mad, so it must go offline, and you'll need to ensure there is enough O2 with an air stone.

Didn't like I don't' like adding extra chemicals, but sometimes it's necessary. Use it sparingly, and only as a last resort, but it does work!

Works great

General I tried this product on advise from another reefer. If your getting cyano from an initial set up, this is the product for you. If your up and running for any major period of time, then maybe not. You have other issues the need to addressed.

Liked about it Worked first treatment
No major side effects

It does the job

General It is recommended that you do it monthly, I think that this can be stretched out a little further.

Liked about it Within 48 hours it will rid your tank of any slime algae, currently I am on a streak 2/2 for outbreaks

Didn't like 20% water change after 48 hours was kind of a pain. Recommended monthly dosing.

Works Great!

General This product does work great but keep in mind it's just a band aide.
It will remove the red slime but more than likely it will return unless you find and eliminate the underlying cause.

Liked about it Easy to use.
Works fast

Didn't like Cannot run skimmer for days.
