It's hard to take fish to the vet so API gives us the tools at home featured

Comments First off, API makes great products, you may not know the name but you will certainly recognize the logo. This particular product is one you hope you never have to use. In many cases infections come from poor tank care, but not always, so even good aquarists find themselves in need of cures. There are two diseases that look similar, Columnaris which is a bacteria, and Saprolegnia which is a fungus. Aquarium Pharmaceuticals MelaFix should take care of either one, and more, such as fin rot, pop eye, and wounds that may be caused in various ways. There are marine and freshwater versions of the product.

According to the product label it won't affect water chemistry. I can't personally attest to this since I remove sick fish from my main tank and put them in a hospital tank for care. However, based on how well the product works, and my experience with their other products, I would feel comfortable with believing their claim; it's a well established company with a good reputation. Of course it's your tank so you decide.

Liked about it 1. Affordable.
2. Effective cure that works quickly.
3. Treats a broad spectrum of diseases in fish and corals.
4. For fresh and marine environments which means you can use a product you trust in every tank you own.
5. Mild formula made from plant extracts.

Didn't like 1. Does not work with all bacteria, only a certain group. If your fish is infected with something other than what this product kills, even if it looks just like some other type, your fish will still be sick. That means you may think you have a cure-all, but you don't. That means take care to monitor your fish even after treatment.

MelaFix Kills Pipefish

Comments Since this product says its safe for all fish I used it to introduce my new pipefish into my seahorse tank. After I treated it they twitched and convulsed so I figured they didn't like the way the tea tree felt but then they died. I figured they were a bad batch so when I got another batch I did the same. When I seen they were twitching around again I immediately did a water change. They are now very lethargic and laying on the bottom of the tank motionless.

Liked about it I've used this product for years and I love it! It does wonders for ill fish.

Didn't like The product should know by now what fish it doesn't work with and should have a warning label on it.

Melafix - Death in a Bottle

Comments this product either takes oxygen from the water or makes it hard for the fish to take oxygen from the water. i placed three bluegill in a five gallon bucket while i moved my 55 gallon aquarium, just like always. the only thing i did differntly was add some melafix to treat some breaks in the tails and spots from being aggressive. i awoke the next morning to find all three fish dead.

Liked about it in my past experience it has healed damage in the fins and tail along with the spots from having aggresive fish.

Didn't like it killed the fish i've had for longer than i can remember.

I havn't used anything since I've tried it

Comments I've used many different medications in the past, but seemed to have to use multiple brands, and redose multiple times to cure diseases, or wounds. The first time I tried this my fish were cured. I have yet to buy another product. One of my favorite features is that it doesn't change the color of the water, and it doesn't smell bad either.

Liked about it Works the first time, I think out of all the times I've used the stuff I've had to one time go into a second week of dosages. Doesn't change the color of the water either.

Didn't like I can't think of any reason not to like it.

This is a must if you have freshwater fish that are aggressive.

Comments I have several tanks that I use this in and they all contain oscars. My fish are always bickering and are often nipped by one another causing open sores on the fish. Usually stuff will heal on its own but if it does not I will remove the fish and place them in the hospital tank and dose the tank. Usually in about a week the wound has healed. The fish don't seem to mind it and by the way they behave in the hospital tank they don't seem to even notice it is in the tank. No labored breathing or inflamed gills like you get with other products. I have added it to an entire tank as well the fish don;t seem to mind it at all.

Liked about it Cheap and easy to use. The odor is not too bad at all. Works pretty fast and does exactly what it says it will do on the bottle. Heals all kinds of wounds and I have noticed it will help with the fins as well if they have been damaged by other fish.

Didn't like Really nothing not to like about this product. I think it would be pretty cool if it came with a dosing cup built in kind of like whats on the new mouth wash bottles. No big deal really but would be a little easier to use so you don;t get the stuff on your hands.

Helpful for wounds

Comments I have used mela-fix in the Koi pond with good results. I have a large female that likes to lay her eggs in tight spots, she usually rubs a few scales off in the process. I add it when she is done laying the eggs. We also had a large predatory bird take a one of our fish and wound another. I added mela-fix to help heal the fish who survived the attack. Within a few days the fish was fine and is still with us today. I have notice some foaming of the water after it was added. I keep some on hand at all time just to be safe. I have not used it in the reef tank yet.

Liked about it Helps heal hurt fish
It is safe for FW and SW fish but, be careful not to over dose

Didn't like No complaints.

As good as advertised for open, unknown ulceration

General I have used this product in the past to treat open ulcerations of unknown origin in my fish utilizing a q-tank. This product was utilized in conjunction with Pimafix and is a "reef-safe" alternative to using copper. I would *not* recommend using this product openly in the display. There is an overall "blue" tint of the water when treating in this manner and the water has a "mentholatum" smell immediately.

After one dose and five days, the fish which were administered this medication showed visible healing and little effects of the previous wound. All fish recovered fully and have, over time, shown no ill effects of either the disease or the treatment. While this medication, to it's own admission, is not a cure-all and according to publication in well-known hobby monthly publications, is a mystery regarding it's active ingredients, it is relatively inexpensive and seems to be a safer alternative to copper. Use at your own risk however.

Liked about it The instructions were fairly forward and easy to administer. The product packaging is clean and easy to understand and not possibly be mistaken for another bottle in the home inventory by accident.

Didn't like Nothing to note at this time.
