Flatworm Exit
|
From the box: "Flatworms can be toxic to reef life if they are allowed to flourish in an aquarium. Once established, they can reproduce quickly and will hide in any crack or crevice that they can find." This product is designed to stun then kill them if left in the tank for long enough. This product is by Salifert.

Worked like a charm in my freshwater tank
Comments
I've been fortunate that I've never had flatworms in my reef tank, but I've had several different kinds of them in my freshwater planted tanks. Like in a reef tank they can cover plants obscuring light and reducing photosynthesis and some of the larger kinds can be predatory. I certainly didn't want them around.
At first I tried some natural solutions but they didn't work, the worm population reduced but didn't vanish. On the advice of a friend I purchased Flatworm Exit from Salifert. I was familiar with their test kits so I knew they made good products.
I added the recommended one drop per gallon to the tank, but it didn't kill the flatworms. I checked on the web and learned that some types are a bit more resistant than others so I did a water change then reapplied but used two drops per gallon instead of one. That did the trick. The flatworms came out and died. I was then able to siphon them out and did another water change.
I've never had to use it again and hope I never do, but I am glad to know it works.

1. Easy to use, just drop it in, one drop per gallon (two if that doesn't work).

1. Too much can be harmful to livestock. Since 1 drop didn't work for me, I did two. If two didn't work I probably would have done three. At some point Salifert indicates it can cause issues so I would be careful.

nice product for when it's needed
Comments
I've used Flatworm Exit a few times in my reefing career, and generally it works well. If you follow the instructions to the letter, you really shouldn't have any problems whatsoever. The issue, however, is that as flatworms die, their bodies disintegrate and they release toxins into the tank. It's these toxins that can have devastating results on a reef tank, so ensuring that proper protocol is followed to eliminate the risk of tank decimation is important.

This is a cheap product that can be very easily implemented to rid the tank of red planaria flatworms (if you've got the acro-eating variety, this product probably won't help much). I've also read about and experimented with the use of FWE to get rid of zoa-eating nudibranchs with pretty good success, but you have to use 2-3x the recommended dose when doing so (and at about 2-3x the risk, in my opinion). The product has great instructions and very clearly spells out the recommended process to use it and ensure best results. There are seldom guaranteed solutions to pests in this hobby, but in my experience this product is all that's required to get rid of these flatworms.

The one drawback in using this is the risk to the rest of the tank. As I've stated, if you follow the instructions you shouldn't have any issue with it. However, if you go outside the scope of the instructions, or use it for other purposes, be prepared for negative results. The biggest mistake I made with the product was dosing it right into the display, eliminating some of the mixing that would occur had I dosed it to the sump. As a result, this extra-concentrated water in the display (before it had time to thoroughly mix with all the tank water) bleached a number of stony corals. I only lost of of them, but it did take about 3 months to fully recover from this accident.

Flatworm exit finally solved my problem.
Comments
I followed the directions exactly the first time I used the product, I added 1 drop per gallon and waited an hour there was minimal flatworm death. The next thing I did following the directions was add an additional .5 drops additionally per gallon which started to get the flatworms to loosen their grip and slowly start to float where I could get them cleaned off. I did the water change and added a ton of carbon as recommended. I needed to repeat the process 2 additional times due to missed flatworms, I was also less careful with these treatments and just added the 1.5 drops per gallon with the water change and carbon addition after. I am now flatworm free and did not lose any livestock.
Price: This product is more expensive than some of the competing products. Due to my fear of having a problem due to so many bad stories about Flatworm exit and other products for flatworm removal that I've seen I did not try the competitors I figured that paying more hopefully would pay off by not killing my livestock.

It eliminated my flatworms in 3 treatments. It is reef safe if you follow the directions. The directions are easy to follow.

The price was substantially higher than the competitors by at least several dollars where I went to purchase it at my LFS. The volume of the medication included was small, I actually had to buy a second vial to finish the treatment with my 55 gallon tank. I had to wait 20 minutes for it to take effect when added to my 55 gallon tank at 1.5 drops per gallon. My main complaint is that I had to use it for three treatments, but with this said I am glad that it got the job done I have tried a lot to kill the flatworms.

What a great product for that infestation.
Comments
We all have bad things happen in the hobby from time to time. And one could argue that 99% of the time it is your own fault. But when things do go bad, it is nice to have a good product to rely on cleaning up your mistakes. I made the mistake of adding a Coral that i did not dip. I then got a very bad Red Planaria outbreak in my 4 year old Reef. Looked at all of my options, and tried manual removal and such.
Just did nothing, then came the Flatworm Exit.
Followed the Directions and bang, no more Red Flatworms...

Had no negative effects during or after treatment
Gave sufficient quantity to treat my system and another

Did not like using a Chemical in an established Reef.
Also just the aftermath and clean up after the product use, but none of this is direct to the Actual chemical. But from the Dead Flatworms..
