Aqua Illuminations SOL Super Blue Modular LED Lighting System

Reduced Energy - The AI modules are some of the most efficient lighting products on the market. Because of the lower energy consumption, an AI module will realize over a 1/3 savings when compared to the equivalent us of a low output metal halide (250W) bulb. - - No Heat Increase - The AI shows less than a 1 degree water temperature increase over a 12 hour period. A low output metal halide (250W) bulb in the same configuration shows an increase of over 15 degrees. Because of this, it is unlikely that aquarists will have to use chillers when running AI modules resulting in substantial savings from equipment purchases and energy consumption. - - Over 8 Times Longer Life - The AI's modules are rated for over 50,000 hours providing for years of maintenance free and environmentally friendly use. Metal Halides require costly annual replacements due to deteriorating output and unpredictable color drift. - - Built in the USA - Every AI product is made with high quality components. We assemble each unit at the AI headquarters and have been doing so since 2007. We test all critical components in-house including a PAR output, heat output, and electricity consumption test after a 24 hour burn in period for each module to ensure that each AI module is of the highest quality. - - Upgradability - - - Your needs as an aquarist can change, and the AquaIlluminationâ„¢ system is designed to change with you. Our modular design allows you to order upgrade packages as your needs evolve. Whether it's to increase the length of your system or to get the latest in LED technology, our modular approach allows you to upgrade without losing your current investment. - -

Well Worth the Purchase featured

Installation and Operation They were very easy to install. The AI rail system was used to hang four modules over a 90 gallon tank. The rails were mounted up under the canopy using 3/4" coping braces. The instructions we self explanatory and the controller was pretty easy to program as well. The controller is a bit touchy. The knob seems to be the issue in most cases.

Performance vs. Expectations They are very powerful lights. For best performance I have found that they need to be place at least 12" off the water line. Otherwise you do not get very good color spread and may have some spotlighting effects.

Value for money Other than DIY I think the value is there. Being LED there is a payback to the lights. No more bulb changes or ballast replacements. My system has just under a 3 year payback.

Customer Support I was delivered (1) light that had a different hue to it. I returned it to AI and they sent me a new module. There were no questions asked. They also answered the phone and had a person who knew what they were talking about answering the phones...

Liked about it The units provide great color. They are controllable, programmable, and efficient.

Didn't like I think they could do better on the weight and the size (profile). It looks like they did solve that on the Vega series.

Well worth the money,Exceeded my expectations and Easy to set up featured

Installation and Operation The AI Sol Blue was very easy to set up and operation is very easy as well. I am running 2 AI Sols using a Reef Keeper Elite system with Lighting controller on my 75 gallon reef and it is very easy to program. The AI Sols were lacking in instruction material but taking into consideration the amount of connections it really didn't effect installation. There is virtually no maintenance required other than an occasional wipe of accumulated salts once every 2 months.

Performance vs. Expectations I was running 2 250 watt Metal Halides for 2 years prior to purchase so when I initially installed the AI Sols I made the mistake of attempting to run them equal to what I thought the tank needed in brightness compared to the Metal Halides and that was a HUGE mistake. I bleached 80 % of my livestock within 2 weeks and finally figured out that these LED's are so powerful I only need to run them at 40% . I have been running the AI Sols at 40% for 6 months and have growth in both SPS and Softies that I never achieved with my Halides. I would HIGHLY recommend these LED's to anyone who is tired of re acclimating their livestock every time they change a halide and want growth that is truly unbelievable!

Value for money Taking everything into consideration as far as power consumption of my previous halides, bulb replacement of the halides every 6 to 8 months and the stress on livestock every time a bulb was replaced I would have to say its a no brainer. Its a little pricey on the front end but what you will save in the long run offsets it .

Customer Support I thought the customer support was pretty good , I always reached someone when I called and hey knew about their product very well.

Liked about it 1. Tremendous growth
2. virtually no heat
3. Easy to operate

Didn't like The only thing I didn't like was the price, Its reasonable in the long run but its the front end price that is keeping all reefers from being able to use them .

This product is insanely good featured

Installation and Operation I have three light units on a the Aqua Illuminations (AI) rack using the AI hanging kit. The hanging kit didn't come with instructions but even so only took me a short time to figure out. The lights came with a quick set up kit, but no real instructions. You will have to go to the Internet for that. Fortunately the AI web site has all that and more.

Once I got my light plugged in and the controller plugged in (a must have part is the controller) it wouldn't work or come on. I was able to hook it to my computer via USB and it turned on there. I updated the firmware that way which was easy. Still the lights weren't working. It turned out to be something simple. Each light comes with a data cable to connect it to other lights so they can all communicate with the control module. The control module comes with a very long cord. It was, too long. I switched to a shorter data cord and it worked right away. My next issue was still that all three lights were not working with the controller's settings. Again it turned out to be the data cables. This time it was that they were not plugged in all the way. The way they were in felt in, but they actually need to click in pretty hard. I pushed on one to see if it had a short and when I did I heard this click and then that light matched the settings of the one with the controller, then I knew I had it. I did the same to the other connections and it all worked. That was the tough part.

After all that the rest was a snap. The controller is totally self explanatory. Setting timers and light blends and intensities is intuitive.

There are three features of these lights that I just can't talk enough about.
1. Color settings. There are white lights, blue lights, and royal blue lights. Each can be set independently. As someone who has been using T5HO lights I am used to being able to perfectly set my color to where I want it by using specific bulb choices. I was worried that I would have to settle with LED's for a color that was close but not perfect. With these three LED colors and the ability to set each to the exact percentage I want it makes for the perfect color. My corals are glowing!
2. Moon phases. Once you set the time zone the lights match the phase of the moon. This is great because many corals use the moon as one of their spawning triggers. My emulating the moon phases in your tank you increase the chance of spawning events.
3. LIGHTNING! That's right, you can create a lightning storm in your tank. This is something that the new EcoTech's do and connect with your Vortech to create actual storm conditions in your tank. While it takes an extra module to get the Sol to connect to the Vortech even just the out of the box lightning feature is awesome. You can set the change of storms and the number of possible storms each day. I have a 10% chance of 1 storm a day. So whole days go by without one. While just the visual is cool, really cool, there is a practical behavioral aspect to the lightning as well. Just as with a real storm the fish hide, corals retract and when the storm is over they come out all at once with the sun.

Performance vs. Expectations I expected these to be awesome lights. They are the top selling LED's and the Sol is in its third generation so all the bugs have been worked out. I had a full demonstration before buying them and did a ton of research. It also helped that CORAL magazine had a whole edition on LED's and touted the Sol as one of the best and most reliable lights on the market.

All that said, they still managed to exceed my expectations. I don't have enough good things to say about these lights.

They are COOL! Each light has a large heat sink on top with a fan in the middle. I was worried about the fan because I really wanted a quiet light. I can't hear the fan AT ALL. My study was always the hottest room in the house, now it is the coolest.

Corals are growing and thriving under this light and I haven't even had it set up that long.

Value for money When I first started looking at lights for my new 210 gallon tank I was really shell shocked at the prices for quality lights that would work well on a 30" deep tank. Metal Halide (MH)/T5HO combo lights were actually in the price range I paid for these LED's. So, while the cost isn't cheap for these it isn't really much more for them.

That said, one must keep in mind that it will be at least 5 years (5-7 according to AI) running at 100% before an LED puck would need changed out. For most tanks 100% intensity is too great so most run them much lower, so can expect upward of 10 years of use. So, to go from 6 months to a year bulb changes to pretty much never...well...there's where the savings starts. Then there is the temperature. MH adds 15 degrees, these, just 1. So cooling my house (remember that hot study) is now more affordable. They also use 75% to 60% less energy that MH and T5HO lights respectively.

While there might be an initial sticker shock with these lights, if you really keep the overall value in mind they are one of the few products that pay for themselves in just a few years. All that and you get better coral growth, moon phases, and lightning storms!

Customer Support I've not had to call customer support but found all the information I needed on the AI web site. It even helped me determine how many units I needed for my tank. This turned out to be one less than my LFS tried to sell me.

Liked about it 1. Quality is very high.
2. Control is awesome.
3. Moon phases.
4. Lightning storms.
5. Three colors of lights and the ability to set each to personal tastes.
6. Cooler.
7. Powerful!
8. Unobtrusive. These lights are small and the hanging rack is slim and attractive.
9. Modular. I can add a new unit in just a few seconds flat.
10. Upgradeable. If AI comes out with new pucks or fans or whatever, these lights are designed to accept the upgrade. So no need to buy a new light to get the latest greatest, just upgrade.
11. Oh heck, I could go on with things I liked!

Didn't like 1. No instructions.
2. Controller button is hard to push sometimes.

Can't imagine going back

Installation and Operation This product is easy to install and operate. The controller takes some getting used too but after playing with it for a little while it is quite easy to use.

Performance vs. Expectations I think the finish of this product is outstanding and the ability to change the color spectrume during different times in the day is ideal so that you can get just the look you want in the aquarium.

Value for money Well I have only had them up and running for a few weeks so its hard to evaluate the cost but the power consumption should make them the better value over the next few years when compared to metal halides.

Customer Support I have once and they were quite helpful.

Liked about it The design of the light. The features in the controllers. The controlibility of the lights themselves.

Didn't like I dont like the rail system. I would have preffered that the lights clamped on instead of sliding within the rail.

Great Lights

Installation and Operation These are the newest hottest LED lights on the market. They provide the highest par rating of any other LED light on the market and are so popular they are kinda hard to find and generally have a wait list. I would highly suggest these for replacement of your existing T5 or even metal halide lighting

Performance vs. Expectations They met the performance expectations and then some.

Value for money Kind of pricey but well worth the investment.
