A beautiful and challenging anemone for the experienced marine aquarist featured

Comments Even though they have Zooxanthellae the sebae (Heteractis crispa) anemone still needs to be fed. They take a variety of meaty foods, fresh or thawed frozen foods work great. I have found particular success feeding silversides to my anemone. I feed my sebae every day. Different anemone have different feeding requirements so don't get confused with feeding advice for a different anemone, some eat everyday, some once a week.

I have also found that my sebae do the best when the water is kept at 80 degrees with very little fluctuation. I started doing this when I read a paper on anemone that stated they had trouble metabolizing food at lower temperatures. Since I have been keeping the tank at 80 degrees I have had a much healthier anemone.

Because anemone move there is the potential for them to sting corals. The sebae doesn't seem to move as much as other anemone do, at least not laterally. Mine moved up from a lower point in the tank to the mid-point. It seems very happy there because it can stretch out to reach the upper tank or lay more flat to be in the middle. In that way it can self-regulate the amount of light and current it gets. The sebae does not seem to like as much current as some anemone, but still requires a good random flow.

When you purchase your anemone, it will most likely be white. In fact, mine was labeled as a "White Sebae Anemone" in the local fish store. However, the only reason it is white is because it is stressed and has ejected its Zooxanthellae. The white color will change as the anemone regains Zooxanthellae at which time it will take on a "dirty" appearance. This is a good thing and should make the aquarist happy as it greatly increases the chances your anemone will live.

Lighting is very important and only general rules can be given since each tank is different, but if your tank is 20 inches or deeper the anemone probably won't have success without metal halide lighting or T5's with good reflectors.

Liked about it 1. Readily takes a variety of frozen food so live isn't usually required.
2. Does not move around as much as some other anemone species.
3. Large size is attractive.
4. My Amphiprion ocellaris readily hosted with it as did my anemone crab (which the clowns eventually drove off).

Didn't like 1. All anemone are difficult to keep. Your new friend may not make it long if all conditions aren't met.
2. May sting and kill other corals and can catch and consume small fish.
3. Can grow quite large.
4. This is the easiest of the difficult anemone to keep. Meaning if you have been successful with Condylactis (Haitian) and Entacmaea quadricolora (Bubble Tip) you may find success with the Sebae.

Not as colorful as other but still a nice addition

Comments I really like the Sebae Anemone. They are not as colorful as some of the other but just as fun to watch a clown playing around in them. IMO the are probably the least aggressive and tent to stay put for the most part.

I have found that they prefer living in the sand and do especially well when hosting a clown. Even of it is hosting I suggest at least weekly feeding of large meaty foods.

reasonably priced and easily available these are very popular anemones.

Liked about it Fun to watch a clown host
They stay put for the most part.
Not to aggressive

Didn't like They are not all that colorful
They can and will get large very fast and will eventually develop an appetite for fish in your tank!

nice basic anemone

General When I first got my seabae it was bleached white. Not knowing that was not the normal color I purchased it. After some more research I found that it was bleached. I hand fed it for a while until it regained the tan color on it's tentacles. My maroons hosted it within a day which was fantastic and now attack me as soon as I get close to their home. I feed mine bits of krill and the clowns feed it also which is fun to watch.

Liked about it pretty easy to keep
my maroon clowns hosted it within a day
has stayed put for the most part
purple tips
has not gotten too big

Didn't like bleached when I got it
stings some corals when it moves around
there are more colorful anemones

Experts only!

Comments Great looking, when in good health they shouldn't be white!

Liked about it They are great looking and a variety of clowns host them.

Didn't like Need to be added to a VERY established aquarium with HIGH lighting or else they will fall apart on you.
